rob1957 Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 We have some X-22 Tamiya Clear , 1/3 oz. bottle . Wondering if we'll have to thin this out before we airbrush ? Will we see a difference using this as opposed to TS-13 Tamiya Clear aerosol ? Thanks. Robert.
Can-Con Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 I use it all the time when tinting my windows and almost every car or pickup I've built over the last couple decades has tinted windows. Yes, you have to thin it for airbrushing as you would any other of their bottle paints. I just use cheap rubbing alcohol for mine but the proper thinner might give even better results.
niteowl7710 Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 Cut it 50/50 with Mr. Leveling Thinner. That goes for all of the X, XF, and LP lines of bottle paints.
Dave G. Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 A good thinner also is denatured alcohol, and as mentioned 50/50 or so depending on age. DNA gives a little more wet look finish than IPA. Both level nice if thinned right etc.......
peteski Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 Tamiya paints in little glass jars are kind of an oddity. While they are low odor, and maybe even thinkable with water, they are alcohol-based. However because they are alcohol-based not water-based, any thinner used for other hotter paints can also be used (as shown in the posts above). T suspect that better results using denatured alcohol are because it is pure alcohol (no water in it), while most Isopropyl Alcohols (IPAs) modelers use are simple rubbing alcohols are 70% or 91% IPA and rest is water. I suspect that if 99% IPA was used, it woudl dry as shiny as when using denatured alcohol. Also, Tamiya does sell a dedicated thinner for those paints (in a little larger glass jar). That should be the safest thinner for it. The TS spray can pint is a much hotter lacquer paint which needs to be thinner with either Tamiya's Lacquer Thinner or a generic lacquer thinner.
rob1957 Posted November 2, 2020 Author Posted November 2, 2020 Thanks for replies. We have Tamiya thinner, so we'll use that . We airbrushed a few test spoons with our colour , we'll spray them up and see what results we get . Sunday night and we're getting walloped with a snow storm !!
