Bob Warfield Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 I've been watching a lot of videos on You Tube trying to refresh myself on the latest products out there. Watching a Donn Yost video the other night he had a machined aluminum outer rim and a resin wheel center. He didn't say where they came from. The wheel was one of the old gray spoke mags popular in the 70's. Any help on locating these parts would be much appreciated. Thanks...Bob
Plowboy Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Pegasus makes a set of aluminum sleeves with tires that you can glue the wheel of your choice into. They have a lip that you can fit the wheel behind or in front of. I usually glue them in with future floor polish. Just place the wheel inside the sleeve and wick it in with a small brush.
Bob Warfield Posted December 19, 2020 Author Posted December 19, 2020 Thanks so much Roger. I've looked all over the internet for some and no luck. Pegasus Hobbies website is down, of course. I guess I'll try to call them Monday. Any other ideas? Thanks...Bob
Mark Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 Check Scale Motorsports, I believe they offer wheel sets made up of turned aluminum outer rims with cast resin centers. If I remember right, they are sold in pairs so that you can mix/match wheel sizes.

Steve, where did you find this? Exactly what I'm looking for. I went to what I thought was that website but couldn't find them. Thanks...Bob
Can-Con Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 The Auto World site has them. Sold out most other places. https://www.autoworldstore.com/category-s/234.htm They're kinda pricey though at almost $19.00 for two wheels.

They're solid chrome. But, you can paint the centers. This model has both sizes on it.
Bob Warfield Posted December 19, 2020 Author Posted December 19, 2020 (edited) Thanks so much guys. That's what I'm looking for. Thanks...Bob Oh and Roger, that's a fine looking automobile! Mercury? Edited December 19, 2020 by Bob Warfield addition
Mark Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 1959 Edsel. It's not obvious because you can't see the front end! For shelf models (I haven't entered a contest in about 35 years) I'll mix and match centers and outer rims from parts box wheels. Sometimes a kit will have "trendy" optional wheels that are out of style but have nicely done outer rims that can be salvaged. Those can be matched with centers from other wheels, even ones with damaged outer rims. I've taken single wheels and made castings to get full sets of centers. If you have two sets of matching (or very close) outer hoops, you can use the second set to make the back side of the rim look more like the front. Don't throw away those wheels that someone twisted off of the parts tree leaving chunks of the outer rim missing; those can be recycled into a new wheel if you like the center.

That right there is one of my problems. I can't throw anything away! Thanks...Bob

This model has the 19" with a larger rear tire. Edited December 19, 2020 by Plowboy
misterNNL Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 Both very nicely done! Thanks for sharing them with us.

I REALLY want custom sized aluminum hoops for whatever wheel centers I choose. I would like to really fill the wheel wells of my Day-2 builds. I have a Taig mini-lathe on its way to make my own. Saturday I built a drop down work table in my garage just for it. I already have the thick-wall aluminum tubing. It just came just the other day. I can't wait to start carving some custom hoops!
