slusher Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 How do you know a model is an annual from other models of the same thing?
tim boyd Posted February 15, 2021 Posted February 15, 2021 (edited) Admittedly shameless plug....but since you asked, this subject is discussed and box art is shown for many annual kits are shown in the book pictured below.....it's available now from the Publisher cartechbooks.com, Amazon.com, ModelRoundup.com, Autoworldstore.com, kalmbachhobbystore.com, the Model Cave in Ypsi, MI, Pasteiner's in Birmingham, MI, and the other usual book retailers.... Your question was also discussed and illustrated in even more depth in my book "Collecting Model Car and Truck Kits" (MBI Publishing, 2001) but that one is long since out of print and pretty pricey in the resale market these days... But sometimes there's slight changes made over the years or possibly the annual was molded in a unique color or there were unique parts in the original not in the reissue. For instance, annual AMT '69 Rivieras had a vinyl top, the reissues were smooth. The JoHan '69 Road Runner annuals had a correct '69 interior but the reissues had '70 interior with the hi-back seats and different sew pattern. You'd need to be more specific Carl. A lot of the reissues are direct copies of the original from the same molds so there'd be no way to tell for sure Edited February 15, 2021 by Can-Con
1972coronet Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Some examples which I can think of right-off : - MPC 1971-1975 Dusters ; 1971 Demon ; 1975-1976 Dart Sport . The latter Dart Sport annuals became : 1.) Smokey Chaser , 1977 2.) Dodge Duster , 1983 3.) Duster Hardtop , 2004 4. ) Rebel Rouser , 2013 (reissue of the 1975 annual ) 5.) Dart Board , 2020 ( reissue of the 1976 annual ) There are countless other examples from AMT and MPC . Typically , an annual gets / got reissued as a "modified-reissue" under various nomenclatures and building options (if any) . Take the MPC 1972 Chevy Pickup : Since '72 was the last year for that bodystyle , MPC reused the tooling over and over for various issues from c.1973- present ; sometimes stock , other times as , say , Cooter's Tow Truck .
