Hi I'm new just joined.I've been looking through this website for information that I need however I cant help but to spend my time looking at all the completed cars.I'm trying to find a good reputable online hobby shop that has good stuff.I need everything I have very little tools.I need a list of tools to get and I will be getting an airbrush so advice on that would be great.Should I start with Revell kits? How do I find the cars I want?I like big American cars from the 70's and 80's coups with the fast back look,Buicks,Fords,Caddies, ect.I would like my models to look protoypical but I also like the low rider custom wheel look.I would like to model the cars that are not usually modeled.Basically I need a starting point,I live in the Bronx,NY.ThanksRichard Fernandez

Oversteer,

Welcome to this discussion group!!! Glad to have you here.

I will get the ball rolling. First, for model car sites, I would check the latest issue of Model Cars Magazine and scour the ads for a company that has the stock you are interested in. Many of these etailers sell at a good discount, and some even offer special inventories such as NASCAR, Drag Racing, or Commercial Vehicles, while others handle just about evrything.

I use ModelRoundup when I need a particular kit, if I haven't been able to get the kit locally or through my friends. You can access them via www:Modelroundup.com. They also offer many out of production kits and resin, and they are pretty up to date on new kits being released. They also will let you know when these kits come into their inventory and ready to ship.

As for tools, there are two sources. I am assuming you do not have a local hobby shop, as tools to me are very personal and best purchased after seeing it and handling it to see if it can do the job you need. Other sources are Harbor Freight Salvage. As for airbrushes, a local arts and crafts store will likely feature a good selection of airbrushes. Last but not least, I also use MicroMark as they offer a periodic catalogue, and have a very large inventory of tools for the modeler.

There will be a lot of replies on this thread, but it will take some time and effort on your part to find the etailer most suited for you, and the effort will most certainly be worth it.

First off, let me be the first to welcome you to the best modeling forum out there, I have been a member to a few, one ridiculed me for not reading the FAQ before asking a question, and one I dont even post or search on.

Second, all you can do is google model kits to find stores. Myself I ge most of my kits from other members here, or eBay. But if you don't like that route try www.emodelcars.com the sellers are mostly if not all members from this board.

Try these other sites if you want:

http://www.tamiyausa.com

http://www.testors.com

http://www.modelroundup.com/

http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/

http://www.towerhobbies.com/plastic/listin..._car_model.html

Thats just to name a few that I have saved.

All those sites havve a tools section if I am not mistaken. But, it would be in your best interest to compare prices. I was looking for a paint stand and the guys turned me toward the Tamiya Paint stand.

tam74522.jpg

Tamiya's price including shipping $29.00

Towerhobbies.com $30.18

hobbylinc.com $24.98

Hope this helps, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. It may take a day or so but someone will answer you.

ok, I guess I might be 3rd in line to say welcome! Yeah, try Jack over at "Model Roundup"He's a REALLY nice guy and he'll give ya a deal once he gets to know ya!( At least he does me) I prefer to deal with him exclusively as he is such a GOOD vendor! NEVER have had any trouble with Jack, an IF there's a problem, He'll make it right! Good man in my book. :P

For car models, I use Model Car Round up, Tower Hobbies and Megahobby.

Tower almost always has the best prices, but Megahobby is usually close and sometimes cheaper. Both stock supplies and tools. Model Car Round Up is good for finding out the latest kits and such, also tends to have stuff I can't get at the other two. Generally a bit more expensive than the other two but not by much.

Great service from all of them.

If you like aircraft or military kits Sprue Brothers is great.

Test your links before posting. You make frequent spelling errors and it's crucial when posting links to be accurate.

They're also highly recommended by me. Kevin's a great guy to deal with, he's got a great family that also help him. His kids like to ride in my Miata

Thanks everyone.I feel that I should get a spray booth.Even though I need many other things the spray booth is substantial in relation to all the other things I need.I live in an apartment and dont mind springing for a good one,Its important to me that I have something that will cut down on the fumes,I'll also be using a mask and if that dont work I'll get one that will. Then comes the airbrush/compressor and probably a lamp so I can see what I'm doing.I already have one of those magnifier things that you wear on your head.I already have a space with a table for me to work on.Then the ordinary tools paints and kits.Until then I'll be reading as much as I can and checking out those beautiful picture. Thanks and happy Thanksgiving.

I've never ordered from them..I would try them if they had online ordering with a shopping cart, etc. Their site is good for looking at pics of the box art, though.

My favorite online kit vendors for domestic kit brands (and RoG) are Evers Toy Store (www.everstoystore.com) and Model Express (www.modelexpress.net), and for imports, Hobby Link Japan (www.hlj.com). They all have easy to use websites w/ shopping carts, easy to check out, great customer service.

I like HLJ too and they are cheap on Japanese kits, however ROG kits are very expensive. Last I checked an ROG Ferrari 250 was $52.

I think that was the best couple hundred bucks I spent: building a spray booth.
