my66s55 Posted February 4, 2024 Author Posted February 4, 2024 The Olds 57-58 J2 head and valve cover are done. Here's pics alone with a couple of the many reference pic's I use to create them. These were very time consuming to do. 3
my66s55 Posted February 18, 2024 Author Posted February 18, 2024 I started working on the Olds J2 engine intake tri power intake manifold and decided to do the Rochester 2g carbs first. Did my usual reference search and came up with good pics of the one used on the 57-58 J2. These aren't finished yet, but they'll do for what I need right now. I'll start working on the manifold tomorrow. These carbs were used on the Chevy, Pontiac and Olds in the later 50"s. 2
BERT100 Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 uh, WOW! impressive figuring and plotting and stuff.
my66s55 Posted March 20, 2024 Author Posted March 20, 2024 The first generation Olds engine is by far the the hardest one to create a 3d file for. The heads took awhile to get right. The tri power intake manifold was a real project. Compared to the Pontiac tri power manifold, the Pontiac is much easier. Here's the J2 engine so far. 4
my66s55 Posted April 6, 2024 Author Posted April 6, 2024 (edited) Dan's working on this for me. 1936 Buick Century coupe. Buick used the smaller Century and put the larger engine in it. Buick used a straight 8 over head valve engine. The car was very fast. www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/buicks-factory-hot-rod-the-1936-century/ Edited April 6, 2024 by my66s55 4
my66s55 Posted April 16, 2024 Author Posted April 16, 2024 I get burned out from working on the same file and change to a different one. The Olds J2 engine is progressing well, but I switched to the 55 Plymouth Belvedere convertible that I posted a few pages back. I have redone the side from the start of the front door to the tail light as it was curved too much. The rear end from the tulip panel on back has been totally redone. Again, because of too much curve in the wrong place. The side chrome was redone as it was incorrect. The tail light chrome has been redone. The tail light lens needs redoing. I also need to fix the lower bottom of the rear fender and put the chrome on the back. The car on the top was the one I started with. The one on the bottom is the one I' working on. The area with all the lines and faces is what I have changed. I have a promo 4dr of this car. It helps a lot. 2
MrObsessive Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 More power to you Doug trying to straighten out somewhat dense mesh! For me personally, I've just taken to redrawing the entire section if needed, as dealing with tight meshes can drive me crazy. Such was the case with the '64 Corvair I did when the front end from the '60 needed changed as they're different. Yes, I gotta switch up on projects too from time to time------I might have five or six going on at the moment. I'm in no hurry to print, as I'd be overrun with cars after too long, so I'm limiting printing any to maybe once a month now. The Plymouth looks great! Was that originally Dan's file? He does such really nice work! I got his '53 Woodill Wildfire not long ago, and it's a VERY nice file. ❤️ 1
my66s55 Posted May 1, 2024 Author Posted May 1, 2024 I went back to the unfinished water pump housing for the 57 Dodge 325 D-500 dual quad engine and finished it in a few hours. There are still some minor adjustments to get it perfect. I have also included a list of the files I have and what status there in. I know my favorites on the list, but I'd be curious as to other persons choice. 1
FoMoCo66 Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 I like the idea of a 58 ford sunliner. The tops on those were always super cool!
MrObsessive Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 (edited) Doug, Eric from EDM3DGarage just came out with a '58 Pontiac Bonneville Hardtop file, and I'm quite certain he's about to follow that up with a convertible. As you know, I got that old hardtop file from 3dExport that............needs some help. I can at least use the interior out of that for the newer '58 Pontiac as that'll save me some work. I like the '58 Sunliner as I have that file, but haven't touched it yet. The uptop on that IMO needs redone/redrawn----I may do that as I'm not quite crazy about how HUM3D did that. To my eyes, it doesn't have the right "swoop". to the rear. I LOVE your Dodge Red Ram Hemi! That's turning out great! I've only one engine I've gotten done so far, and that's the Australian Hemi six in their Valiant Charger for that market. The file came with a very incomplete engine with a number of (significant) things missing, so I took some time and drew up what was needed, and eventually I'll print it. Keep up the GREAT work! my66s55 Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 I recently picked up a nice file of the 51-52 Nash Healy and started to make it 3d printable. Much to my surprise, It had both an inner and outer wall. They were separated by .016 mm. Normally, I would delete the inner walls and extend the outer's to 1.5 mm thickness. The poly count, i.e. triangle count is very high. That being the case, I decided to just extend the inner walls. Here is the car and my example of extending. I also have some projects in the build stage. Here are the 1937 Delehaye F & F and 1953 Studebaker Champion. I need to touch up the 2 tone paint job on the Delehaye. The 53 Stude was a printable file, but lacked the V8 and Studebaker name emblems on the sides and the Comander script emblem on the trunk. I created and added those. Also, I had to create a back seat. It didn't have one. Look closely between the rear side and back window for the Studemaker name emblem. 1
MrObsessive Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 YIKES!! Ooooooh.................I hate dual shelled files! I just got an Amphicar file the other day, and the ENTIRE thing is dual walled! I'll have my work cut out for me, as the file is VERY nice, it's obviously way too thin to print as is. The Studebaker looks GREAT! Are those Andrey's files? I thought I saw a Stude on there a while back. ❤️

my66s55 Posted June 6, 2024 Author Posted June 6, 2024 Updates on the 36 Buick. The interior comes next. The Nash Healy is in the printer. 2

The '40 La Salle couple has always been a body style that looked great to me. The '54 and '57 Olds 88 hardtops would also be nice to have.
stitchdup Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 i see a lot of cool stuff but the pre 40 stuff and the 59 gm cars has most interest for me just now, but my mood changes with the wind so tomorrow might be 60s muscle, lol
my66s55 Posted July 15, 2024 Author Posted July 15, 2024 I'm back at creating the Olds 57-58 J2 engine. There is some confusion as to what this engine looks like. Olds started with their first v8 engine in 1949. It's a 303 c.i. that was later bored out to 324 c.i. In 1957, the engine was bored and stroked to create the 371 c.i. The list of parts that either changed in appearance or design are as follows: the oil pan, the block, the exhaust manifolds, the bottom of the bell housing, the oil filter bracket, the starter and generator and a Olds factory built tri-power intake manifold. An Olds 303 or 324 with an aftermarket tri power manifold was listed for sale on the internet as a J2, but it was miss labeled. The J2 was painted gold and called the Golden Rocket. Here is the mislabeled green engine, followed by a real J2 engine and block side.. My progress as of yet 2
my66s55 Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 I finished the back of the block, created the correct oil filter adapter and ruffly created the oil pan. Note what appears on the side of the oil pan just below the spin on oil filter. Olds created this on the 57-58 371. It holds a quart of oil. The oil pan hold 5 quarts of oil without an oil filter, and 6 quarts with one. There's still some adjustments to be made yet.
my66s55 Posted August 11, 2024 Author Posted August 11, 2024 Some more on the J2. Olds used 2 different air cleaners for this engine. The one pictured is an oil bath unit used in 1957. At some time during that year, they switched to the round cartridge unit. It doesn't say when it happened. I'm going to use this one for this engine as it will be going into 57's. I have the round one file started for the 58. Also note that I have the passenger side exhaust manifold work in process. Olds utilized a single exhaust system on most vehicles. If you notice the large part on the bottom, it was used to connect the crossover pipe to the pipe going to the muffler. When duel exhausts were used, a block off plate closed off the side going to the crossover pipe. I will use duel exhaust, so the plate is there.
my66s55 Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 I created the generator bracket on the passenger side exhaust manifold and created the exhaust manifold for the driver side. The oil filter was changed and the starter motor scaled. 1
my66s55 Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 Timing chain cover, water pump and fuel pump added. It only need the 2 pulleys, a fan, a trans and some touch up and it's done. 1
