disconovaman Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I've decided to start a thread on this build. I picked it up last month at the local model clubmeet. It hadn't seen the light of day in over 40 years. I know some folks will cringe that I dismantled such a cool surviving kit. If I can relieve some anxiety for you all, I am a professional build-up restoration specialist ???... self proclaimed but still none the less ??? Here is where I'm at with the process Stripped all the paint and taking my time carefully disassembling the project. Spoiler alert... it's gonna be a Gasser!
alan barton Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 That will make a great gasser! I have no problems with the resto - while the original builder did a fine job on a sometimes challenging kit, it was built box stock so he hasn't added any of his own personality other than choosing paint colours. Sitting on your shelf it would have looked dull and unloved. Now it's going to look cool. Great that you are keeping the side trim. I built two of these as a kid. My teenage exuberance means that they have now been rebuilt as a battered speedway car and a backdated 55 Chevy post sedan from the American Graffiti rollover scene - they were simply too far gone to justify the work necessary to make them a "nice" model. I will look forward to progress on your version. Cheers Alan
Scott8950 Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 It's yours and you should build it the way you want it. I like where your going with it.
disconovaman Posted July 18, 2021 Author Posted July 18, 2021 I need a push to keep moving on this project so it doesn't stall out like so many of my started kits have. So thanks for the motivation to keep me going on this... Back for a small victory update. I got some Pearl Yellow on the old girl... I managed to keep the doors and trunk in tack, (as the amount of glue used on the hinge boxes was to much to worry with.) I had to paint it two separate times first the door jambs and under the trunk, then the outter body. I'm pleased with the outcome thus far... Next up... designing decals, foil work, interior, scratch build a straight axle etc...etc...etc... 1

Thanks, I used two stage Modelmaster's Pearl Yellow over Modelmaster's Dark Yellow base. It has some heavy flakes in the pearl and really looks scale for a model. I don't think it's in production anymore. It's from my old stock I've had for years. I'll be sad when it's gone... I painted this 57 with it too.
disconovaman Posted July 25, 2021 Author Posted July 25, 2021 Thanks folks, I've been doing as much as time will allow. I built this 409 and painted the engine bay flat black... I'm gonna step it up next week though the clubmeet is coming up next Saturday wanna have it somewhat finished by then.
disconovaman Posted August 1, 2021 Author Posted August 1, 2021 Well I worked on the 56 here and there for twenty minutes at a time all week... wasn't able to finish or even get close. I did design some decals...made it to the club meet with my progress anyway... here's some stuff that showed up. The club challenge was any kit that we got from that pile of barn finds from last month's clubmeet. I named the car after a beer in case anyone was wondering. I got the idea years ago when I seen a soccer game where a guy ran across the field with no clothes on and no one could catch him ? Then I seen an ad for the beer and the idea was born. I was trying to think of an original name for a Gasser and this seemed to fit. I'll keep plugging away til I get it finished eventually...
