absmiami Posted October 26, 2024 Author Posted October 26, 2024 MJ - I think teams were thinking about aero then - but no could measure the effects - maybe hi speed stability improvement limited because the nose punched such a big hole through the air ?? Lemans entrants experimented with vertical fins and tail length in early fifties - right ?
MarkJ Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Not sure but I remember seeing some pictures of some wild looking streamliners at that high banked facility in Germany. I think it was called Avus that might have been in the early fifties. They definitely looked like aero was involved with their design.
absmiami Posted November 1, 2024 Author Posted November 1, 2024 The trunk is secured w these spring hooks … i made them with the wound wire that i planned on using in the eng compartment - this wire was too large for the shielded oil and water temp lines - but was about right for these springs … can’t decide whether to add the rubber shielding … 1
absmiami Posted November 1, 2024 Author Posted November 1, 2024 Now for some final bulkhead thingies … 1
absmiami Posted November 1, 2024 Author Posted November 1, 2024 When i made the battery last yr i was not happy with the overscale cable terminals - i soldered up a simplified terminal thats scale accurate - the old plastic ones were way too big … 1
MarkJ Posted November 1, 2024 Posted November 1, 2024 Andrew it would be sad to cover up those magnificent trunk springs with rubber shielding. Those babies are beautiful. The overall detail on this build is off the chart impressive. You continue to amaze. Also love the battery in its compartment with working door. Now that's modeling at a high level.
absmiami Posted November 2, 2024 Author Posted November 2, 2024 Gracias MJ Years ago - before 3D printing found the hobby - a Polish outfit named Taurus made these tiny resin wingnut fasteners - geared i think towards the military modelers - if you had a desperate need for wingnut fasteners for 24th scale - this was them - i bought these with this project in mind …
absmiami Posted November 2, 2024 Author Posted November 2, 2024 The bulkhead battery hatch and tool wrap bay hatch were fastened with these things - so on they go - don’t try this at home kids - UNLESS - you have an Optivsor - - - 3
absmiami Posted November 4, 2024 Author Posted November 4, 2024 Another scale issue in 24th are bonnett straps and buckles - they are included on the UMI kit photo-etch fret but are way over-sized - most other kits in this scale also have this issue - the fix is to - of course - roll your own … the buckle is soldered up fr .070 wide nickel strip - with a slot filed into the end - and some .015 nick silver rod …. The belt is made fr lead strip - width of .040 - 1

As it nears its completion, looking at it makes me feel warm, inside. Very, very well done, sir!
MarkJ Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Keep on keeping on, Andrew. This build has so many interesting points of interest. I will kind of be sad when its finished, but so looking forward to the final photos in the under-glass forum.
Pierre Rivard Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Wind screens that pivot, hood straps that buckle... at 1/24 scale. Extraordinary work Andrew. 1
absmiami Posted November 12, 2024 Author Posted November 12, 2024 I had used a decal for the chassis plate - it was from an older kit - and it came unglued and just sort of went somewhere - so the replacement is a peice of nickel silver strip - which actually looks better … 1
absmiami Posted November 12, 2024 Author Posted November 12, 2024 The last part in the eng bay is a screw valve in a flute-shaped cup - part of the fuel line - this was machined on my Sheeline from a small rod of nickel silver that you can get from sites that cater to knife makers … 1
