Light mist Alclad chrome over black until you get the look you want, then seal it with a water-based clear.

Chrome OVER the black??

Just enough to lightly coat the wheels. When you see a slight shine, stop.

Thanks, unfortunately no Alclad in my paint stash. Molotow tho.

To me, Alclad chrome has always looked like black chrome. That being said, Alclad has black chrome in their catalog of paints. I have some but have not tried it yet.

Well that's interesting to know about the Alclad black chrome. Wish you have had tried it to see how it looks.

Give this a look, Mike. It starts just before he compares the chrome to the black chrome.

I polish the black first to remove any blimishes the spray the chrome at 12 psi about 5 inches from the part. Very light coats otherwise it becomes silver, after the chrome is dry I dip the part in future, but I’ve noticed with Alclad future tends to dull the bright chrome just a bit, not much but noticeable if your watching closely

So Anthony, which picture is the black chrome because if its the top one it just looks black, really hard to tell if it has the chrome look.

Hi Mike, I haven’t perfected it but I do get good results with Tamiya smoke. My experience is that multiple light coats is a much better result. Too heavy, and it goes sideways.

I will watch to see what works for you. I really like the black chrome look myself. Oh, the smoke was applied directly over chrome Pegasus wheels in both examples.

Cheers, Steve

The top is the gloss black under coat, I didn’t have any black chrome parts at the moment, but I apply the alclad black chrome the same as the bright chrome,

Hi Steve..I kinda lost track of this thread.   Thats what I'm talkin' about. The Gremlin wheels are exactly what I need to do.  I did think the Smoke would work. So no prep over the chrome, just directly onto the smooth surface?

Yes sir! Wipe them clean and spray. I highly recommend heating the paint a bit so it flows and settles flat, although in Tennessee that might not be needed… Pacific Northwest is a different story. Keep the coats thin. I believe the Gremlin has 6 light coats on the wheels. Practice on a wheel you can stand to mess up first? That’s what I did. Also, for bumpers and other chrome, I often use one or two light coats of smoke, it makes the chrome a little less toy like. Good luck and I look forward to seeing how it goes. I just got 2 more cans of smoke from my LHS today. My current WIP is eating up my smoke!

Cheers, Steve
