Craft beading and jewelry wire. Lots of sizes available.

The right spool is 0.3mm, the left spool is 0.5mm and 32 gauge for return springs.

Dead electronic devices have supplied me with a variety of fine wire sizes over the years, along with random other little parts shapes. Former cassette type answering machine here, for example.

Luke's suggestion of Craft Beading Wire is good. It is available in different gauge thicknesses like he said, but it is also available as plated and sometimes coloured finishes.

I use small (.009”) steel guitar string.

My choice also. It's shiny and stays straight unless you deliberately bend it.
