Mpc 70 Mercury cyclone annual restoration...sort of

Hello all, so I purchased this built up on EBay for $20 or $30 ( can’t quite remember exactly) a while ago. It was fairly complete but I took it apart and threw the painted stuff into the purple pond. The plan came to me quickly.... not stock, not even day 2..... I’m going for that 6-7 year old muscle car turned into a nasty street machine... a “ day 6 “ theme. Go fast parts and mean look . It will have a tunnel fed 429 SCJ, cragars , black paint and a black vinyl top. I included a few photos showing what I started with and how it’s going. Used a couple other kits as donors ( Revell 70 torino & Amt 71 cyclone nascar kit ) as well as raiding my parts box and several parts from Missing link ( BIG thank you to missing link ! )

I'll be watching this one! My holy-grail kit that I've been searching for at a reasonable price for the last decade or more! If you got this built-up at $20 to $30, it must have been some time ago!  Quite certain this kit will never be reissued.

I like where you're going with this build!

Very cool build, I'll tag along for the ride.

I took one of these years ago and used it for parts to turn an AMT 69 Torino Modified stocker (where they took the annual kit and modified the wheel openings) back to stock. Used the wheel openings from this as well as the chassis, which was better then the AMT chassis. This was long before they reissued the 1969 "Cobra" kit.

Very cool! I really dig this project. It's coming along great.

I really like the hue of white used on the interior parts. What paint did you use?

Thanks Trevor, I used Tamiya ts-7 for that slight off white color.

Thanks Len, I wish I had a few of the kits I parted when I was younger lol

Thanks for that. I have a black 70 Torino GT that I built years ago, Good looking car, but not happy with the finish so I want to repaint it someday. It also has a white interior, for which I used Testors flat white. That interior colour has bothered me ever since. Seeing yours now, the interior of my Torino will be getting repainted, too. The TS-7 looks perfect.

I like absolutely everything about this car. It just nails the '70s look that I grew up with to perfection, only it's a bit nicer than the cars rolling around back then.

Thanks Mike, that’s what I was going for. Like it just jumped out of the pages of a 1976 issue of Car Craft. Lots of memories of these cars this way, very fortunate to get to experience them back then.

I'm really loving this build. In fact you've inspired me to dig up whatever bits I could find from the one I destroyed years ago and see what I could do with it. So far this is what I have found and I bought a built-up MPC 1971 Stocker to add to the mix. Hoping I can come up with enough parts to make a runner.😄

Thanks Len, looks like you’re off to a good start. The bumpers are the most important part imo.
