Hope your Home Projects went Well!

No leaks in the roof, so I'm happy.

I will try to dig out the back issue of SAE in which the release announcement was made, but Mark's memory covered most of the pertinent details.

Found it in the February 1997 issue of SAE:

Pretty sure someone here shared this previously?:

Just resurrecting this thread to see if anyone has any insight into what became of the AMT '66 C10 tooling?  Judging by Casey's post, since American Satco didn't end up marketing these, I'm guessing the small run of "Wheat's Nostalgia" retro promos happened shortly afterwards in the late nineties.

So probably about 25 years ago?  Is Roger Sill still alive?  Seems like this tooling should still exist, somewhere.  Would be great to see Round 2 reaquire this tooling and get these in production again.  As popular as vintage trucks are, seems like these would do well.

And since it's a longbed with the side trim, there's enough to differentiate it from the Revell kits.  Plus the Revell kits fall short in some proportional/detail issues.

Interesting questions....I asked several of the same ones on another discussion board quite some time ago (maybe 20 years ago?) and soon rec'd a PM from someone i trusted, advising me not to pursue these questions in a public forum.  And never found out any real info thereafter that I can recall now...TB t

Thanks for the insight, Tim.  Now I'm even MORE intrigued!

I recall the buzz around the re-release back in the day and was excited and looking forward to be able to get a long box.  Unfortunately it sounds like things got messy and it never happened.

With Round 2 doing clones of old kits, maybe it could be a possibility again, or maybe a year model that we don’t get, like ‘62-‘63 with a long box… you never know these days as kits that I thought were long gone are again becoming a reality!

I purchased this '66 thinking it was a promo. Most promo are molded in factory colors and Dark Aqua Poly was a new for '66 color. Probably a Satco. Looks like it has the original '60 torsion bar front suspension with X frame, not the correct '66 suspension and frame.

Hmm. I see yours has blackwall tires while mine has whitewalls. Wonder which was more common?

I was all tooted up on coffee and hope thinking similar thoughts - "heck if they shot this in the 90's, that would be like only a few years ago..." Alas, the ole mental time clock needs a reset, that was 30 years ago.  Sounds like the chances of ever seeing the original promo again are slim and none.

Likewise, if R2 was going to take a swing with a clone tool, I could see going back farther than '66 - perhaps as far back as '61-3 so as to leave a little headroom for the Revell Chevys, which are excellent items.

Cloning the '61-2-3 would align perfectly with their agenda of torpedoing the value of my kit stash - lol, kidding Steve G.

Thanks to Craig for the tip on searching the thread, too.

And just cos' I'm procrastinating about shoveling even more snow on Daytona 500 day, and the imagination is doing laps without me two questions:

1. What was the last year for a retail Chevy pickup annual kit? I'm thinking '63. Recalling there was a F-100 in '64-5... do not recall ever seeing the Chevy. Taking a wild guess that AMT was de-proliferating the catalog at the time was there an upper limit on how many items they could list and still manage to distribute?

2. Is the pickup shown (like Hitchock, LOL) in the background of the box art of one of the AMT 'gift set' issues, with a trailer and '40 Willys. It was almost a profile, not really detailed, but it did make me go hmmmmmmm.... it would have been a very cool item for sure.

FWIW, when I was a kid, those gift sets were not common at the LHS or the bigger retailers. When they did surface, the boxes were usually battered and had been plundered of slicks, decals, etc.

Bob....the AMT '63 Chevy pickup was the last annual kit entry for them until the 1967 kit C10 issue (which went to MPC for 1968, and may have actually been an MPC tool merchandised under the AMT brand for 1967, but who knows for sure?)

The AMT 1964 catalog F100 was actually a rebox of the 1963 annual kit; they never tooled another F100 annual kit after the '63 until the 1975 (?) kit, which was later issued in AMT annual kit livery for the 1977 model year (that year was the stock only build version with the addition of the rare Ford factory pickup box topper and a "CB").

Unless I'm forgetting something else along the way (the rest of you, join in with corrections if needed)!  TB

Thanks, that's what I thought.

The one that caught me on the F-100 was the '64 rebox - with some inventory left over in 1965, maybe? I do not ever recall seeing that on a shelf at any LHS (well, I was 4 y.o., but can recall models from earlier than that) or in any of my 'finds' of decades past.

A new/old tool Chevy sure would be a nice analogue to the F-100s, and I bet it would sell as well or better than the Fords.

Something I forgot about with the '63 F-100; AMT continued producing the promos until at least 1965 - but the only ones I've seen were plated dealer awards. Looks like the only thing they changed was the year on the bumpers; the '63 grill wasn't updated:

Looks like this one got the gold-plated wheelcovers off a '66 Galaxie award promo.

correct; the '63 Ford truck promo had the front and rear license plates updated for '64 and '65; another weird situation as with the '66 Impala SS and Wildcat using the '65 interior

Here's my '64 dealer truck. It had the 3 bladed hubcaps.
