NOBLNG Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 Please excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge….but what are all these molded in features on the support supposed to be and do they belong there? I’ve tried googling images and the best I can come up with are some screenshots from videos and they all look pretty smooth. I am going to install a larger radiator and will likely just sand them off, but I am curious.?
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 (edited) To the best of my knowledge, the only thing that has any legit reason to be there is the AC drier as shown in your 1:1 pic, and if your model doesn't have AC, it doesn't need that either...though you might find horns mounted behind the grille The other stuff engraved on the core support appears to be some numnutz idea of random mechanical complication added to break up an otherwise flat expanse of plastic. Mighta been nice to get the stamped-in details of the panel right, as shown on your pic, and leave the gobbledygook trash off the thing. Edited May 18, 2022 by Ace-Garageguy CLARITY
Jordan White Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 I wonder if it had anything to do with the drag version of the Jimmy considering the weird riveting look they have going around the edges.
espo Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 Two things that I find interesting looking at the picture of the models core support. First, the size of the opening for the radiator looks far to small. Second, The core support looks as if it might need to be turned around and the surface we're seeing maybe should be facing the engine compartment. My question is the core support cast with the body or is it mountyed during the assembly?

I have no AC going in, so I’ll smooth it right down. The horns are actually located inside the cradle to the left of the rad on a 1:1. 3 hours ago, Jordan White said: I wonder if it had anything to do with the drag version of the Jimmy considering the weird riveting look they have going around the edges. I’m not familiar with that kit, but the rivets could suggest that. Edited May 18, 2022 by NOBLNG

Yes, the radiator opening scales out to 15” square which is less than half as wide as it should be and a couple of inches shorter.? This support is molded as part of the body. It has a few features on the inside also which are pretty much indistinguishable.?

Well, I think as Ace pointed out, this looks more like a figment of someone's imagination as too the equipment that would be on the core support on the grill side. Some sanding should clear the area.
Plowboy Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 Before you do anything, place the grille on the body and see what will be visible. Then go from there.

Move along…Nothing to see here folks!? Seriously, there is nothing visible from the front unless the grill is opened up, which I intend to do.? More on these mods in my build thread here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/158387-blazer-crew-chief/page/2/#comments Thanks Guys!? Edited May 19, 2022 by NOBLNG
Plowboy Posted May 19, 2022 Posted May 19, 2022 This kit is right at fifty years old. So, it's not going to be up to modern or even modern-ish standards. When it came out originally, it was probably high tech at the time for a model.
