MrObsessive Posted September 4, 2022 Share Posted September 4, 2022 (edited) For whatever reason, AMT has ignored the '69 Chevy Impala Sports Coupe, and keep giving us the formal roof 1970 Caprice. I thought at one time of taking the '70 Chevy, modifying the roof from the '70 Buick Wildcat (ESPECIALLY the C pillar), and doing this version. Well, not long ago, I came across a series of 3D models on this site here. I was quite impressed by what I saw, and I got in touch with the designer of those model as he's on FB. He then posted a bunch of pics on FB of what he was working on, and one of them happened to be a 3D file of the '69 Impala with the CORRECT Sports Coupe roofline. I bought the file, and set about to convert them to make it printable. He did offer it in a .stl file, but I'd rather work with the .obj files as I can convert them later as for me it's easier to work with in that format. Here are pics of the results. I have to say that this is the ONLY correct version of this car I've seen. I've seen the resin versions out there, but to my eyes the roofline is simply not correct. I have gotten other very nice files from him before the Chevy.........a '79 Pontiac Bonneville, '77 Grand Prix, 1980 Cadillac Seville, and a 1970 Mercury Marauder X 100. The body has a few print issues which are easily fixed with some liquid resin and a UV light. The trunk file I'll need to print later as that wouldn't fit on the build plate as it was. First, the length of the front fender in front of the wheel opening - too long, should taper/curve more abruptly. The reason AMT keeps reissuing the '70 Impala Custom Coupe (the name they used for the Caprice and Impala formal roof) is because it was never turned into a modified stocker. I finally picked up a kit for the first time recently. The '69 Impala SS kit and promo were also the Custom Coupe, which I think looks better than the other hardtop, and opinions will vary🙂. If Round2's cloning program is successful, we can one day expect to see more variations such as this since 3D files is the future of our hobby. The other thing that looks off to me is the rear side marker light. It looks like it’s too low on the quarter panel. I don't have a 3D printer, but I really would like someone to print this out for me. Could you consider printing one of those out in 1/25 scale and SELLING it to me. I can fix any of the print ISSUES myself I am really interested in purchasing one of these. I went onto the website that you linked & they do NOT offer that 1969 Impala, which you have shown here, that you printed out, on your own 3D printer, for sale anymore.
