Horrorshow Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 A while back I saw an old stock car racing movie called Thunder in Carolina. It featured actual footage from the 1959 Southern 500. There was a brief shot of Richard Petty’s #43 that was white with a blue roof. I thought it looked pretty cool so I bought a Christine kit. I had just discovered the world of aftermarket decals and found what I needed at Mike’s Decals. I sanded all the trim off the body and filled the headlights and taillights with Tamiya putty. Lots of Rustoleum primer and paint to cover the red molded body. I used Tamiya light blue for the roof and hood. Plastic Performance wheels and tires finished it off. I know Richard didn’t get the STP sponsorship until the 70’s and I think I overdid it with the 7UP decals but I’m not a stickler for details. 1
bbowser Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 Looks great! I like the white as something different.
TarheelRick Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 Where in the world did you see "Thunder in Carolina"? I saw that movie at a drive-in with my mom and dad and sisters sometime in 1959. The movie was filmed within 50 miles of my house, which in 1959 was a big deal. In one of the scenes where Rory Calhoun is trying out his racecar on the backroads, there is a black 38 Ford coupe that shows up in the scene, that car belonged to my second cousin. Been wanting to see it again. Now on to your build. Very clean build has the look of that era stock car. Really nice color representation especially with a red plastic base.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 VERY nice. I'd been contemplating going something similar. You've sold me.
64Comet404 Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 I always loved the Darlington announcer describing "The young rookie, Dick Petty..." ?
espo Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 Great looking paint and decal finishes. I never realized that Richard ever ran such a paint scheme. I like the look of when stock Car Racing was done with cars a little closer to stock than what we have seen for years.
Street Rod Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 Very cool! That’s from the days when they raced CARS.
