roadhawg Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Was an air cleaner like this (or something similar) ever offered in either kit form or aftermarket? Thanks! 1
espo Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 I recall seeing something like that in some '60's era Corvette kits. The real Corvette used such an air cleaner set up on many of their carbureted engines in the '60's.
Pete J. Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Well, that is certainly not stock on a GTO.?
Mark Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 I've seen too many GTOs with that style air cleaner, to think it wasn't stock. They didn't all have functional hood scoops or the "tub" that seals up to the underside of the hood. That said, some Corvette kits (AMT '55 in particular) had that style air cleaner, but none I'm aware of even attempted to put the louver detail around the perimeter.

Yes sir, that is 100% factory stock for a non-ram air '67 GTO. 30 minutes ago, Mark said: I've seen too many GTOs with that style air cleaner, to think it wasn't stock. I went and dug out a '55 Corvette kit.....and while it DOES have the same basic design (without louvers), it's only about half the diameter.
Mark Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Looks like a job for 3D printing. No GTO kit I'm aware of ever had that air cleaner: heck, the MPC '67 still had tri-power! A molded styrene part won't ever have the louver detail; adding that wouldn't allow the part to be pulled out of the tool.
deuces wild Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 (edited) I think the 270 hp 283 with the twin carbs had an air cleaner like the one posted above... Edited September 16, 2022 by deuces wild
blizzy63 Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 This 1967 Pontiac brochure page says that that air cleaner was factory stock:

Tri-Power ended with the 389 and 421 in 1966. 1967 was 400 and 428. 1966 Pontiac brochure page below: Edited September 18, 2022 by blizzy63
kelson Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Pretty sure it's in the multi piece body 60'corvette,Revell re-released a few years ago.
Jack L Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 if you can find one the non stock AMT 1968 Firebird had one .I got 2 off ebay

In their world, '67s had it, as did Bonnevilles through 1970. Mopar guys could still get a Hemi Challenger or Barracuda in '74...

One thing to remember with the appearance of the engine and air filter. This was a time when stricter emission requirements in several states actually made it illegal for manufactures to use open element air cleaners, California being one of them. This had to do with what they called the crankcase vent system that would put the vapors into the air cleaner housing, and not required in every state. I think California's reasoning was that an open element air cleaner would allow the vapors to inter the atmosphere creating pollution. This along with pumping fresh air into the exhaust manifolds was supposed to save us all.
roadhawg Posted October 3, 2022 Author Posted October 3, 2022 (edited) Update on this topic, in case anyone else is interested. The Revell '58 Corvette has an air cleaner that is almost exactly like the Pontiac pancake Air cleaner, the only difference is it has 3 wing nut indentions instead of one.....easily fixed. Lee (Classicgas) was kind enough to send me one. So if anyone wants to build a non-ram air '67 GTO, there you go. Edited October 3, 2022 by roadhawg ....
