XYHARRY Posted September 30, 2022 Share Posted September 30, 2022 G'day all. Here I have my AMT/ERTL 1968 Shelby GT500 which I built about two months ago. I wanted to present it with the rare 427sohc option. I'm not sure if it was a factory option but I believe a few did have this engine. For it to fit, the hood had to be opened up, which I did but opted to use a scoop from my parts box to make it look more like Shelby might have done it if it was offered to the public. Please excuse the messy masking job, I had a bit of trouble with it. Exhaust was built with spare parts but looks wrong. Anyway, thanks for looking. All feedback encouraged and appreciated. I bought this kit about 20 years ago as one of a four pack sold at Kmart in Australia. I would have built it long ago if I had known it would look this good built. The Cammer was never a factory option in a production car, and it didn't physically fit between the spring towers of the Mustang chassis. The only chassis that the engine fit with no modifications was the full size Galaxie, but it's an impressive looking engine in any car. vamach1 Posted October 1, 2022 Share Posted October 1, 2022 Nice color choice. it reminds of the first one I built back in the 70’s and I even painted the interior red before I knew more about Mustangs and Shelbys and the more limited factory exterior and interior color choices. The cammer motor was AMTs choice as they wanted the builder to have the option of building a weekend drag car. I think after the one-off 427 1967 GT500 Super Snake, Ford realized the cost of the racing engines was too prohibitive and frankly dangerous in a street pony car. That is what makes modeling great - you can build what someone may have built in a garage or race shop sometimes without even having to scrounge parts from another kit. I didn't know about the 67 super snake. The internet only mentions that there 'may' have been some cammers offered by Shelby in 68.
