mrmike Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 My new project is the '66 GTO by Pontiac. I painted the hood and body yesterday afternoon, but I am not totally happy with the color. It is too bright and reflective! It should be more subdued like the cap is. I may strip the color and start again. I added a Hurst T-Handle shifter and a friend has given me another '66 GTO kit for the decals. 7
1972coronet Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 Another classic G.M. A-body from the sixties for your collection. Quite looking forward to following your progress, @mrmike!
espo Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 While I like the shade of gold, you might consider this a good base coat for a candy color if that is of interest to you.
KWT Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 Looking forward to another one of your builds! I have this one and have pulled it from the shelf many times... alas... it's still wrapped lol
mrmike Posted March 12, 2023 Author Posted March 12, 2023 Thanks John, David and Jeremy! I was thinking of adding another color over the gold, but a gold color is what I was going for. I am going to look for another gold that is more subdued.
KWT Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 Which color did you use? Maybe looking for like Champagne Gold?
espo Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 Does Tamiya TS-21 Gold look like something you would want? Tamiya also has one TS Lt. Sand Metallic that would be between this and the Champagne you mentioned. 2
mrmike Posted March 12, 2023 Author Posted March 12, 2023 I found a gold in my spray paint box called Tamiya TS-75 Champagne Gold and it sprayed nicely over the Tamiya TS-21 Gold that is already on the body. It is not exactly the color I want, but I had it. More GTO to come... 6

mrmike Posted March 13, 2023 Author Posted March 13, 2023 Thanks John and Steve! This color was originally used on my Lindberg 1964 Plymouth Belvedere from the TV series, Overhaulin'. One of my favorite models! 3
KWT Posted March 13, 2023 Posted March 13, 2023 Wow... may not have been what you originally wanted, but that looks good on that body. I may have to grab a can now
mrmike Posted March 17, 2023 Author Posted March 17, 2023 Thanks Jeremy and Carl! I have completed the 389 Tri-power engine! 7
mrmike Posted March 17, 2023 Author Posted March 17, 2023 I assembled the wheels and tires to the GTO. I decided to use the Hurst wheels and the last of my Shabo Tire Graphics. I drilled out the ends of the exhaust system and painted the insides with Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black. I have hand painted many of the parts by hand and will paint the rest with spray cans. 3
espo Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 Like the Hurst wheels. Man they were expensive even back then.
mrmike Posted March 18, 2023 Author Posted March 18, 2023 I never knew the price of those wheels, now or ever.
mrmike Posted March 20, 2023 Author Posted March 20, 2023 (edited) Thanks Gareth! I have since then painted the spokes on the Hurst wheels with Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminum. Edited March 20, 2023 by mrmike
mrmike Posted March 20, 2023 Author Posted March 20, 2023 The chassis is mostly assembled. Just need a few touch ups. 5
KWT Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Nice looking chassis/engine you got there. It's gonna be a real looker I'm sure.
Dragonhawk1066 Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Looking good so far Mike. I used Tamiya TS-87 Titanium Gold on my '67 Impala SS. 8
charlie8575 Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 I built one of these a long time ago. Very nice kit, although I found the rear shocks a little touchy. Charlie Larkin

Charlie Larkin Was it the Revell '66 GTO or the AMT '67 GTO? They may look similar, but are different in builds. I was told the Revell kit was the better kit. Craig, I built the custom version and converted it to stock. Edited March 22, 2023 by mrmike 4
