JollySipper Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 Hello, fellas........ I've been looking for a '36 Ford Coupe kit lately. I see a lot of versions all with different box art. I'm wondering..... Do all the releases have the same parts? I'm wanting to build it as a custom, so things like fender skirts, smooth hood sides, and the like are the main thing I would be concerned about....... Thanks for any and all help!
stitchdup Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 you have 2 options. the old amt and monogram. I prefer the monogram kit as theres a couple of la salle grilles available from replicas and miniatures of maryland and a few other custom parts. I think the fit of both isn't up to modern standards but both can build up nice. The downside to the monogram is all the body moldings are too flat, especially the rear end around the trunk. If you can find one of the monogram 36s in the flat box it has a load of options. The downside to the amt is the front end can be a chore to line up correctly and can be pretty clearly seen in some builds where the body line goes wonky from the firewall forward
bobss396 Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 I have a bunch of AMT versions. Some of the custom parts vary, but the stock-build options are there. I have the OG version from 1961 (?), another from around 1965, the Dick Tracy one too. I may have more in my stash.
Mark Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 AMT kit has gone through some changes over the years. It started out as a three-window with a somewhat incorrect roadster version (doors are too long). First couple of issues had a chopped roof, later a stock one. The Dick Tracy kit had a five-window roof. Door line was moved making that version more suitable for a roadster, but those parts weren't included. Next couple of five-window issues had a different roof from the Dick Tracy version. Round 2 moved the door line again and restored the five-window, now with both chopped and stock roofs as well as the roadster parts. Glass for one of the coupe versions is not included, however it is all flat glass so not a big deal. Issues with more recent kits include no headlight lens detail, also interior bucket is thin on one side and thick on the other. Generally a good kit though. 1

Does that version have a continental kit?

Yes, it's the car show version. It does have an outside mounted spare, just like the stock version, but it does have fender skirts.
ZTony8 Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 Because of the scale differences the parts from the two kits won't readily interchange.
JollySipper Posted August 14, 2023 Author Posted August 14, 2023 Guys, I ended up getting the Car Show release of the Monogram kit! I was wondering...... Are there chopped top conversions for it? I really want to do a roadster with a chop. I maybe could handle the windshield frame, but what about the uptop? and Are there chopped coupe lids out there? Thanks for any and all help, guys!
stitchdup Posted August 14, 2023 Posted August 14, 2023 theres only one for the amt kit. If you plan your cuts carefully its not a bad kit to chop yourself if you plan your cuts carefully and if goes wrong you can always build a custom roadster if you cut the front last. Your going to have to stretch the roof so if you cut it about halfway along the doors for across the roof (might be an idea to glue in some temp supports for the front half) then carefully pick where to cut it at the sides, i messed this up and it caused problems trying to fill it. I cut the rear as tight to the body molding as possible and around the corners to where it gets flat. I try to follow the flat up the sides until it reaches the crown of the roof (pick this cut carefully and you'll save a load of work, i try to get it where the curve is about 3/4 of the way down when viewed from the side, get it right and you just need to trim the top edge of the window piece and dont need much filler. the sides you need to avoid the window frame curves as much as possible but make these cuts now and you should avoid need ing to use filler pieces as you can trim the edges to suit the rear window piece. You should need a filler piece about 5mm wide for the front edge but any scrap late 30s/40s body can supply pieces the right shape. Its easy to chop it too far so be sure to plan carefully. I hope this makes sense cos i never mind on the take pics when i do it but this works for most rounded roof cars from the mid 30s til mid 50s cars too if you lean the front screen back and cut close to the front for the across the roof cut.
RancheroSteve Posted August 14, 2023 Posted August 14, 2023 R&M did carry one for the Monogram kit - I'm not sure if it's still available. I'm using it for this build here (yeah I know - gotta get back to it):

JollySipper Posted August 14, 2023 Author Posted August 14, 2023 Cool, Guys.... Thanks! I was really wanting to do it up as a chopped roadster, but it's good to know that a coupe top might be available!
Richard Bartrop Posted August 14, 2023 Posted August 14, 2023 The Revell open version is a convertible coupe, as opposed to the AMT's roadster, but there are plenty of references online for making the conversion, if that's important to you.
JollySipper Posted August 15, 2023 Author Posted August 15, 2023 (edited) I did see the difference between the roadster (separate windshield frame...) and the convertible. What I reeeeeaaaaally want to do is mimic these side curtains! Would they have been put on a roadster, or a convertible? Pic borrowed from the web...... Edited August 15, 2023 by JollySipper
Richard Bartrop Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Only on a roadster. The convertibles had roll up windows, so they didn't need the side curtains
