1977 Dodge Monaco

I originally bought this kit in the early 90s for my son right after the Batman movie with Keaton and Nicholson came out. He played with it for a while, mostly the guns in the kit and took parts off the trees, but never got around to building it. So I am going to build it now as a 1977 Dodge Monaco. I toyed with the idea of building the Joker Goon Car but after looking at several on the internet decided not to. I thought this might look OK with a vinyl roof so I used some 2" inch tape to do that. This roof is about 2" wide so I marked the top at 1/2" on both sides and began the process. The middle part is 1 1/8" so that there is an overlap of 1/16" on each side. Then painted it Krylon Ivory. That's all there is to it.

I subsequently taped off the top using some index card stock and gave the rest of the body a coat of primer this morning after letting the top dry overnight. This afternoon I painted the body and all the other parts.  As y'all know, I like to experiment with colors and paints so I used Krylon Satin Avocado (two coats) and two coats of Krylon Clear Lacquer. Once everything was dry. I pulled the tape on the top and here it is. Its a bit unusual but I think will build up as a nice grocery-getter box stock. And... it will be out of my closet! Thanks for looking! 😎

Thanks, Mike and Sonny! I appreciate your comments!

Rubbed out the body and the Krylon paint takes more time and is not the best as it doesn't level out very well and it always has sort of a texture to it that is hard to rub out. But its good enough for this old relic. Got it rubbed out as well as I can and foiled one side. More foil to do. Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Joe! I appreciate your comment!

I finished the foil work on the body so I thought I would take a few outdoor photos on my painting table on the patio to better show the actual color of the paint. Next will be the interior that I painted Tamiya Dark Green. I still have to rub out the hood. Thanks for looking! 😎

Thanks, Jeremy, Carl and Steve! I appreciate your comments!

Need some help! I'm trying to find and ugly steering wheel like the one below. I know I have one (because I don't like them and  never use them) somewhere but can't find it and I have been through all my extra Mopar parts. I'm going through the Chevy parts next but thought maybe someone knows a kit that has this padded horizontal bar type steering wheel. Help appreciated.

Thanks, John! I appreciate your help. Unfortunately, the Dodge van is not one of the kits I have. I had an A-team van once upon a time and I'm don't remember if that was a Dodge van. Anyway, my son played with it and it was destroyed long ago.

So I found a steering wheel, I think came from a Chevy Chevelle that kinda fits the bill. I added a couple of strips of plastic and some putty and molded it into something that will have to pass for that padded steering wheel. I also made a steering column from 3/32" tube and added a turn signal indicator and shifter from the paederts box. I used flat tan on the door panels and dash for wood accents and will add foil to the doors and chrome pen for the door handles. I'll also try to find some gauge decals for the dash. Here are a couple of photos of the basic interior. More to come - thanks for looking! 😎

Finished the interior. Nothing special - I found some gauge decals with white centers that are not representative of the actual car but they'll do. Painted in the wood trim on the steering wheel and added some foil and chrome pen and its done. Thanks for looking! 😎

Thanks, Carl! I appreciate your comment!

The rear glass is in and I am mocking this one up with wheels and tires. I wanted to use some skinny whitewalls and full wheel covers to complete the look of this full size grocery getter. Unfortunately, I don't have any full size Mopar wheel covers so these 62 Chevy wheel covers will have to do until I find some others. Since taking this photo, I have blackwashed them as well as other parts, such as engine parts and interior wood. The front end will sit down a little more once glued in place. Thanks for looking! 😎
