I know there are a couple of us here that would rather be working on 39’s, but we have to work with the hand AMT dealt us.

I want to clear over everything so I’ll have to test the decals to see if they can take it? Lenny, I just looked at my Woody kit. It's the AMT kit...I thought that was what you had .? Mine has very light grain molded in the panels. But the decals are crapola. Just black line grain patterns on clear backing which, of course, gives the builder some flexibility but you would need to keep the panels light enough for the grain to be seen. I dunno, man....it seems the Revell is better in that respect. I stole so much out of it I'd have to buy another one to build it!

And it’s a 48 Ford Woody. You must have the AMT 41 Woody. I have a few of those stashed away, I have to take a peek at one and see how it compares. If you need spare parts I’m gonna have a lot left form this 48 when I’m done if you can use them.
LennyB Posted July 13, 2024 Author Posted July 13, 2024 The Woody Some progress was made this week on the woody. Finishing up with the woodwork. I used the kit decals for the center panels, at first attempting to just cut them from the decal sheet and glue them in place as Jim suggested. This didn't look right as it made the panels appear too shallow. Next I applied them as intended, wet and slippery and they settled in pretty good. Went over them with a coat of clear lacquer but thanks to the humidity they got a bit foggy. Fortunately an additional coat cleared things up again. In typical '41 Plymouth fashion whenever you start to get ahead with one thing you fall behind with another. Now months after the hood was fabricated, it needed to be widened to match the width of the woody body, I can see a slight ghosting of the seam. So slight it doesn't show on camera. I might be able to wet sand the clear and get rid of it but I think for now I will just leave it as it may still be settling. If it ever gets worse I can redo the hood alone. That's all for now folks!
FoMoCo66 Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 Agreed, that is one fine looking woody. Everyone on this forum is giving this kit way more justice than it deserves, it's so cool!

customline Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 Oh she's a beauty, Len ?! Don't forget the battery!
NOBLNG Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Saw this beauty at a local car show today. I really dig the side mirror. 1
Tim W. SoCal Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Only the top of the line Special De Luxe trim models came with ANY rear view mirrors!...

FoMoCo66 Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 Now that's funny man, it's the perfect size to! ???
LennyB Posted July 18, 2024 Author Posted July 18, 2024 Ahh, now I can breathe. And wouldn't you just know it...AMT put a 12volt battery into this thing. They can't get anything right.? And of course stuffing that Hemi in there isn't helping things. The engine sits right up against the firewall which didn't leave any room for the coil to go in the stock location. So I went with an aftermarket yellow coil on top of the engine. Did Accel make coils back then??

Did Accel make coils back then?? It's a hot rod now so the 12 V battery is OK, Len. I think the Accell stuff was sorta tan....but the yellow looks nice. (Wifey suggested a shade of pink but that wouldn't fit the time period in any believable way.) What is the time period depicted here? And it's a "no" for me on the air cleaner. There's no wing-nut. ?. Gotta have a wing-nut, Len.
NOBLNG Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 (edited) Accel coils are yellow with a tan cap, and the company was founded in 1983 according to Google. Edited July 20, 2024 by NOBLNG 1

LennyB Posted July 20, 2024 Author Posted July 20, 2024 The Coupe I keep thinking I'm getting close to finishing the coupe, then I find stuff that I have overlooked.? Added some small details over the past few days that I knew were still on the list (I really should have started that spread-sheet) and a few others that I completely forgot about, or wanted subconsciously to ignore.? Added wipers and a side view mirror. Never did the review mirror and at this point we can live without it. Also added the rear license plate. Debating as to whether I should add a front plate. Don't want to be pulled over for not having a front plate. Been there, done that. The front end does look a bit naked without a bumper.? Then I realized I left half of the front suspension parts off, shocks, sway bar and center link. Fun stuff to add after the chassis and body have been married for a while. What didn't help was that I fabricated my own front spindles so some of the mounting points were MIA. Had to pin the center link to get it to fit to the spindles. Glad I haven't gotten as far with the Woody so there is still time to finish that front end before consummation. So for now I'm going to set this aside and work on the Woody. 'till next time....?
LennyB Posted July 20, 2024 Author Posted July 20, 2024 The Woody It's a weird juxtaposition halving the AMT 41 Plymouth mated to the Revell 48 Woody. The details on the Plymouth are so crude and inaccurate as we have discussed ad nauseam, while the 48 Ford has details up the wazoo. Now that the body is finally painted I've moved on to getting the interior assembled. The Woody comes with a full insert for the underside of the roof as well as having wood detail added to the top section of all the glass. I wood grained the top insert but just painted the rest of the inside a flat tan. Didn't think it was necessary to go overboard and wood grain everything. The windshield includes sunvisors. And the top of the other windows have an added piece embossed to look like wood. Here is how we look with the windows installed. And this time I remembered the rearview mirror. I think there may be a dome light still to be added, the kit instructions are out to lunch right now so I need to check on that still. Next I started fitting the dash and firewall. Both pieces need to be modified as they are too narrow for the Woody body and the firewall too short as well. I had previously added a section to the bottom of the firewall but I found it was not enough. Dash and firewall test fitted into body. And dash given an initial coat of yellow before final cleanup and wood-graining. Dash will get a cluster inlay so the original details have been removed. And so we move on...
Sam I Am Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 It happens that a friend of mine just purchased a 1941 Packard woody. For a couple of years Packard did produce a woody, but only as a four door. This one is a two door, and whoever it was that did the conversion started with a two door sedan, and well, see for yourself. 1
LennyB Posted July 20, 2024 Author Posted July 20, 2024 Interesting piece of work. Not sure I like how they finished the rear off, a bit boxy looking.
LennyB Posted August 5, 2024 Author Posted August 5, 2024 The Woody Tying up some loose ends on the Woody as well this weekend. Got some BMF work done as well as painting in the welting. Added some door handles and some taillights. Went easy on myself and used the bits straight out of the Revell '48 Ford kit. They are close enough to what the Plymouth should have so I signed them up for duty. Also enlisted the license plate. Have a bit of touch-up work around the rear wheel opening as the masking took some of the wood off. After adding the rear door handle I realized it was facing to the left. Hope the driver of this buggy is left handed. I still have to finish up the grill. As it was heavily modified on the coupe I couldn't simply use it OOTB for the Woody. ? Do have a couple of issues holding me up from completing this. Apparently not all '41 Plymouth kits are created equal. Big surprise there.... None of the kits I had came with stock bumpers and I used the last stock steering wheel on the Coupe. Guess I'm gonna have to rip open another kit for those bits.? Signing off for now. Heading off for Paris, wonder if the Woody can make it there on one tank of gas.? 1
