The Woody

Tying up some loose ends on the Woody as well this weekend. Got some BMF work done as well as painting in the welting. Added some door handles and some taillights. Went easy on myself and used the bits straight out of the Revell '48 Ford kit. They are close enough to what the Plymouth should have so I signed them up for duty. Also enlisted the license plate.

Have a bit of touch-up work around the rear wheel opening as the masking took some of the wood off.

After adding the rear door handle I realized it was facing to the left. Hope the driver of this buggy is left handed.

I still have to finish up the grill. As it was heavily modified on the coupe I couldn't simply use it OOTB for the Woody. ?

Do have a couple of issues holding me up from completing this. Apparently not all '41 Plymouth kits are created equal. Big surprise there.... None of the kits I had came with stock bumpers and I used the last stock steering wheel on the Coupe. Guess I'm gonna have to rip open another kit for those bits.?

Signing off for now. Heading off for Paris, wonder if the Woody can make it there on one tank of gas.?

I have a few sets of those bumpers, Len. They're yours if you need 'em. Surf boards too. Got plenty of those. ?‍♂️

Thanks Jim, but I was able to come up with one. Maybe when I build my next '41 Plymouth....in my next lifetime.?

Now back to our regularly scheduled grill.

My friend is sending me a chopped resin body. Has your next life time arrived yet?   ?

Sam, been there, done that. It may be subtle but I already chopped the top on my coupe. ☺️

I actually have a resin 4-door sedan body as well as a 3-D printed 39, so I guess I'm not done yet. I must be crazy?

I think crazy is required if you want to build models. ?

I need to find the '46-'48 body made for this chassis. My father-in-law has one and I would like to replicate it.

Is this the one you're talking about? Bought it off eBay a while back. It's rather crude.  Gonna take a CRAZY amount of work.

That's the one. Let me know if it's too crazy for you and you want to trade it.

No, I plan on doing it. Have to do some other things in between to clear my head first.

How do you do that, Lenny? When I try that, I end up with a pile of Evergreen scrap, three bodies that need to be re-painted, and band-aids on my thumbs. ?

How do you put band-aids on your thumbs if you need thumbs to do that?

Since I am "all thumbs" anyway, Len, it's not a problem ?

All kidding aside, Len, the woody looks great. The wood grain is amazing. ? (that's one of my good thumbs)

Thanks. It actually has me itching to build the 48 Ford Woody proper. Already figured out half of it.?

I have two woodies waiting for my attentions; the AMT '41 Ford and a resin '53. The'41 has a pretty impressive interior. The '53 is a Flintstone unit.  Problem is that there's always something else I'm itching to build. I think it's a personality flaw. ?.. I'm OK with it. ?

The Woody

Tidying up a few random bits on the Woody. Found a stock steering wheel so we can get ourselves headed in the right direction. Looking for info online to see the proper color for the wheel didn't yield a lot of results. The general consensus seemed to point to bright white. Didn't really seem correct to me so I went with an off white (it just looks bright in the pic). Appeared the column and shifter should be body color so I gave them a coat and stuck the little bugger in place. Excuse my dust.?

Next moved on to revisit an old friend and get the grill sorted out. Wanted to tackle it the same as I did the coupe. You would think that after doing it once the second time would be easier. That was not the case. Stripped the grill, that went fine, and filed out the teeth a bit wider, still fine.

DSC00454.jpg.01e2bd44ab10b9af6fb0a701ccc7e1db.jpg

Applied the BMF and then a Tamiya Accent wash in black. That didn't look right as the wash washed out in the high spots. Removed the BMF and sent the grill back into the wash. Second attempt, new foil, washed with Testors Flat Black. Left it too long to dry and it wouldn't come off. Not without taking the foil with it.  Third try, finally worked and we have what I'm calling a finished grill.

Moving to the back I added a rear bumper. Still thinking about putting the spare on the back. Seemed to be more of a Ford thing so it doesn't seem appropriate. But I like the way it looks. WDYT?

Don't think I showed this before but I swapped out the wheels and tires. What I had during mock-up were a bit on the small side and looked a bit silly. Went with some larger Firestone's and painted on some wide white walls.

Just a few more odds and ends and I think we should be done. See ya....

Tires look great, Len. I think the rear mount would look pretty normal on any woody. Be sure to drill out the hub and lugs ?. Would you rather have a wingtip bumper on the back to match the front? I've got a bunch of 'em.

Jim, I was going to put the wingtip bumper on the back but looking online all the woody's have a plain bumper. Maybe the wingtip would get in the way of the tailgate coming down.

It happens that a friend of mine just purchased a 1941 Packard woody. For a couple of years Packard did produce a woody, but only as a four door. This one is a two door, and whoever it was that did the conversion started with a two door sedan, and well, see for yourself.
