Randy Kern Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) The story goes something like this........ John Greenwood built a 427 powered Corvette for the 1971 12 Hours of Sebring race in an eye-catching American flag paint scheme that covered the whole body. He finished the race with an impressive first in the GT class, and 7th overall! Co-driving the car was then celebrity/part time racer Dick Smothers, of the '60s comedy duo 'The Smothers Brothers'. After the race, the 'Vette was displayed at John's shop for a time. Later, it was sold a couple times over, run hard and put away wet in a barn near New Holland, Pa. A couple years ago an old, decrepit (but still youthful minded) ex-road racer by the name of Kyle Billets found the battered old war horse languishing in the barn. Knowing the historical significance of this once proud racer, he struck a deal, took it home and restored it to run in current vintage road racing events. Wanting to give it his personal touch though, he made a slight change from the original paint scheme, putting the stars & stripes only on the top of the body. He did locate a set of original Minilite wheels from his buddy, another old road racer by the name of Norm Veber, of R&M Co. of Md. The exhaust was brightened up also, with a coat of Jet-Hot, and another nostalgic touch of duct tape over the headlight covers. Kyle hopes you like it, and thanks for looking! Note: any resemblances to people living or dead is purely coincidental. Edited March 29, 2009 by Randy Kern

Bluzboy66 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 The story goes something like this........ John Greenwood built a 427 powered Corvette........ I saw this Vette at the April CPMCC meeting last Saturday. WOW! Nice. And the duct tape over the headlights is an awesome detail. Mike
Peter Lombardo Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Randy....very nice. I love those old racing Corvettes.....I built two and have 4 more to go. Nice car, great story and great details. I love the idea of creating the story behind the build to give it a real feeling of history. Beautiful on more then a few levels.
karbuildr Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Very well done, one of my favorite racing Corvettes.
