For about 5 days at sunrise a male Mourning Dove was cooing to attract a mate. Suddenly the cooing stopped. When I opened my window to let some air I saw a female a nesting in my gutter. When I first saw it, I thought it was dead. Then I saw it blinking her eyes. Soon I hope the eggs will hatch and I will be able take some pictures of the newborns.

Yup. Dove soup. Mourning doves are just about the stupidest birds on the planet. Beautiful, but stupid.

They may not be that bright, but they regularly tease my Rottweiler. She goes tearing out the back door, barking up a storm, and the Doves sit on the ground until the last minute, and then fly up into the Mulberry Tree, just far enough to be out of reach. The Dog goes nuts for 5 minutes, then gives up, and goes away, only to do it again a few minutes later. I swear the Doves know EXACTLY what they are doing, playing a game with the dog.

The doves around here tend to nest quite low to the ground, and very few young seem to survive being cat-lunch, whereas the sparrows and finches and wrens and mockingbirds and bluebirds and others that nest high in the trees are doing just fine.

People hunt the poor things here......... I don't know why! You have to bag so many just to get anything out of them. I'd rather go to the grocer for a rotisserie chicken!

There’s just about nothing more soothing than the sound of the morning doves early in the morning and in the evening.

We have plenty of mourning doves too, but I suppose “unfortunately” for us, the main “nesters” that we get are barn swallows.

beautiful and interesting little birds, but messy as h*ll !

And talk about protective of their young!!! ?

You can literally feel your hair blow in the breeze they make as they swoop down on you!!

We have a few Doves that like the pick at the seed on the ground under our feeders. They do have a soothing sound. I think they are related to the Pigeon, based on how they walk.

I hope so. She is about 6inches away from the downspout.
