I tend to do my multi-tone paint jobs in sections. I use a combination of what I think of as "good tape" for the separation lines and cover the remainder with cheaper 2" painter's tape or plastic wrap. I also use Silly Putty for the complex odd shaped spaces.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos of the masking I did when I built my version of the kit you're working on.

But you may remember the '57 Ford I  built earlier this year. It's similar to what I did for my Edsel.

Additionally, I tend to put only one coat of paint, usually the primary base coat, on the trim strips. I keep them covered for the following coats to help prevent loss of detail.

This method works for me and I hope you find the information helpful Jim.

David G.

Oh heck, Carl, I was just playin'. I'm no authority on pretty much everything. ?

I always cut my tape stick it on my shirt and put it on the body, just helps it not remove paint. I have seen blue and frog pull paint but who know all the factors.

I think a major factor for tape pulling paint would be the surface prep, Carl.

Today brought very good painting weather so I got some paint done. This is Tamiya rattle can paint and it will be clear-coated using the same. Thanks for looking in ?

You can see here where my masking guy screwed up. He has since been punished. I've taken away his gummy privileges for one night.

That big yellow lump looks perfectly at home in the engine bay, colours are great!

Think I should weather the engine a bit?

Beautiful paint, Jim you don’t have to weather the engine  unless you really want to..

I guess I should wait to see how the paint job turns out before I make that decision. Thanks, Carl.

If you weather the engine, then you have to weather the engine bay, then you have to weather the chassis... ?

It looks like the masking worked out pretty well Jim. With a masking project like this there are almost always paint leaks of some kind. Over the years I've become better at spotting potential trouble spots, but they still sneak past me on occasion.

Great color choice too, it has a very Fifties feel to it.

Well Dave, I'm getting lots of masking practice on this one. I think I finally have a decent paint job after a half-dozen trips to the paint department. On my second coat of blue, I masked the rear quarter accents with foil because I read somewhere that its a good way to get a precision paint line. Nonsense.  The residue had to be removed and alcohol did funny things to the paint earlier so I used Goo Gone to remove the adhesive residue.  Then I washed it with Dawn.

Twice I had to repaint blue because of rub-through on the front fenders. I finally got the clear on the whole body but it looks like I'm going to need more clear on the roof. I'm getting there but this one won't be super smooth - I just can't deal with the front fenders again.  Nope, they're done. Anyway, today it looks like this ??IMG_6878.jpg.061d7e9f4f6114ed846201c7b46621fe.jpgIMG_6880.jpg.3da57a60fcfa30ab2938d7ad3cb79420.jpgIMG_6882.jpg.5effcc13a466bea913d1698bfa806f32.jpgIMG_6881.thumb.jpg.e292f74e2688896f0a147f6625cc5b68.jpgIMG_6879.jpg.827d3c03e644f402b90e9ebff2300a70.jpg

I think you're good, they won't see it from Dearborn.

The merger with ERTL was a very good thing for AMT.

The merger with Racing Champions not so much. It almost ended AMT/MPC.

Maybe it's a thing with Edsels. I had similar problems with mine Jim. Right down to the rub-through on the fenders.

58_Edsel_39.jpg.b11b346a5fee52d020a529ca19add4e1.jpg

On top of that (literally) the coat after the one above didn't want to go on like texture paint.

58_Edsel_40.jpg.93e800df9b465f926912207a051f7ddb.jpg

It took some extra work but in the end I got it all sorted.

Persistence and Perseverance my friend!
