Paul Payne Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Dug out this partially disassembled glue bomb. Missing some parts which will be fabricated. I partially took apart the kit engine which was missing one carb scoop- decided to substitute an engine from the stash instead. The body needed some filler so putty was thrown and sanded down. After flat black primer a couple areas needed a bit more work- more primer and things are looking promising. The center console cover was missing so one got cut out of sheet styrene and treated to some chrome spray. The back of the seats were open with a chrome frame, so filler panels were cut from more styrene. Next step will be painting the interior components. No instrument panel, so one harmonious with the styling was found in the stash, as well as a shifter which I think was from an Avanti. Preliminary pix for things as they were- soon progress pix! 3

Carl it is a Jordan Playboy which was not actually produced in 1:1 as far as I know. There was a 1933 Jordan Playboy which I have attached a photo of. I don’t mean to hijack Paul’s thread and he actually posted a thread a couple years ago featuring this and other kits made by Renwal. Paul I’m sure you can tell Carl more than I can but I’ll take a quick stab. Carl I believe Chrysler designer Virgil Exner designed several old classic cars as he thought they might look if they were still made in 1966. Renwal kitted up a number of his designs. Paul can help us out as to just how many but for years I thought they did 4 of his designs but I believe it was closer to 7. I believe a couple of his designs were built in 1:1. I remember a Stutz Blackhawk It was not identical but was quite similar to the Stutz Bearcat 1966 design which was one of the Renwal kits. I believe Elvis owned a Blackhawk and Hot Wheels did a Blackhawk. Blackhawk was not produced until 4 years or so after Exner’s 1966 design. Again sorry for ransacking the thread. Hope this helps Carl and Paul I love your project. I shall follow!-Mark 2
Bugatti Fan Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 I quite like to see those old Renwal Revival models that have seen better days ( I won't say a glue ....! It will probably set off a lot of computers at Langley. LOL ) being brought back to life using up to date materials and sympathetic parts from spares boxes.I I will be following this restoration with interest, having seen what modellers have already done with the Renwal Duesenberg and Packard models that needed restoring. On a personal note I have been looking for a Renwal Exner Bugatti that is in a dire condition to restore and give to the Bugattii Trust Museum here in the UK. If anyone out there can help, please get in contact.
James2 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Interesting model and subject matter, you have my interest....
Paul Payne Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 (edited) Thank you all for the interest and input! The Mercer Cobra was produced as a show car for a copper company- copper trim instead of chrome. The restoration is progressing well- body parts in primer, very close to final paint- dark metallic blue. Should look great contrasting with the chrome rocker panels and wheel arches. The parts stash provided the gauges which are appropriate since I have no idea what the kit gauge panel looks like. The kit tires are way too narrow for a modern car, so the stash provided some Monogram wide white wall with wider tread- the wire wheels fit well. Also found some knock offs since the kit caps were missing. Next step will be painting he interior parts with a medium blue that should go well with the exterior color. The pile of bumpers is to fabricate the front and rear fender trim parts- only one original- so this will be reference for the others. More pix when I get more done! Bainford Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Cool project. It's neat to see two Renwal Revivals on the forum at the same time. I find these cars intriguing, though not all of them are beautiful. I think the Jordan and the Stutz are the most pleasing stylistically. This is the first time I've seen the Jordan built. Nice work so far. I'll be following along. 1
LennyB Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 As basic as these kits were I always found them interesting. It would be nice if they turned up again if the molds are still around somewhere. I see I’m not the only one to use a baking pan to lay out my projects. 1
slusher Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Nice work so far those wire wheels look great! 1

Paul Payne Posted October 25, 2024 Author Posted October 25, 2024 Progress! The interior is assembled, the chassis plate is up on its wheels and tires, engine has been set in place but not installed, and painting the body has begun! Plenty more to do, more pix when I get more done! 1
