Andy Oldenburg Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Hi everybody, by and by I have been building the cars of my parents. I am in need of information about this car. After checking my books, my best guess would be a 57/58 Mercury, but I am not sure. The busy gentleman washing daddy´s car is me at age 3?. Who can give me a solid information? Thanks for any help and best wishes! Andy 1
Scott Colmer Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 The image is flopped. The steering wheel is on the right. See the M on the front lip of the hood? It's a Mercury. 1
StevenGuthmiller Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Yes, it is in fact a ‘58 Mercury. Unfortunately, the ‘58 Mercury was never produced in kit form, however, it was produced in resin by Modelhaus at one point. Unfortunately, Modelhaus kits have often become even more expensive than some of the originals that they copied, and even more so for kits like this that were never produced in plastic. Steve 2
W Humble Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Hemmings Classic Cars (last year, I think) featured a Stroppe-built Merc police special that has been restored. Retired CHP? I think it was once a 'kiddie-cop" patrol car for Chico (CA) State College in 1959-60. Big ole' 430, etc. It was around Chico for years with the door star removed, and flat-black rat-can primer on the white door. Interesting cars; some had to contribute their running gear to the big Edsels, even. The '57's came with a single headlight, I think, but a very awkward dual-light adaptation was available from the factory to be 'up to date' with the new cars with quad lights. Stude/Packard did this trick too, and it looked very J.C. Whitney, indeed!! Wick

Wick When the big push from Detroit to go with the dual headlights on the '57-year model cars the problem was that a few states didn't allow dual headlights on vehicles sold in their states. The reasons may be forgotten in time. What Ford Motor Company as well as Chrysler had to do on the models that they wanted to put dual headlights on was to build cars with either single or dual headlights on the same body styles until everyone agreed to allow dual headlights on the '58 models and beyond.
Andy Oldenburg Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 THANK YOU for all your help! That´s what I love this community for. The slide must have been flipped when being copied. I havn´t noticed that myself. Seems like I will have my problems getting my hands on a model.... Best wishes, Andy
