Warren D Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 As I'm winding up another build (never posted it to the WIP but it will be in the Under Glass section by the end of the week), I'm gearing up for this one. I've wanted to do a quarry dump for many years and now that Global has a 3D Atlas-type quarry dump body, this is a good time. I selected the IH V190 as it has the look I'm after. I recall getting the V190 off the auction site, maybe from a resin caster in PA. It's not AITM. The dump body is from Global and the donor chassis is the IH 4300. Wheels and tires will be from Jamie at Moluminum. The first issue I encountered is the dump body. The tailgate pivot mechanism just wouldn't fit between any of the current suspension systems. I wanted leaf springs so that was a bit limiting as well. The pieces hanging down would interfere with the tires so I got out the saws and removed the lower parts. You'll need to go to Global's website to see what it looked like before, the "offending" parts were off before I thought to take pics. Attached below are a couple of reference pics of trucks with quarry bodies. The A-Car just has a cable while the Mack has the linkage. Not sure yet which way I'll go but it should be easy enough. The next mod will be the dump pivot. Both trucks seem to have the pivot farther back than the 3D print so I'll be moving the pivot back and probably making new supports as they will need to be longer. The chassis doesn't look like it will need too much modification to accept the V190 cab, but it usually ends up being more involved than I first figure. 5
Gary Chastain Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 What a cool idea for a build, will be watching 2
Biggu Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 That's going to be a cool old school rock truck ... love dump trucks ! 1
BK9300 Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 For anything not OOB, lots of modifications ahead - will be an interesting project 2
Rockford Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 I've never seen a tailgate setup like that. This will be interesting. 2

Well, the tailgate is attached to the body and doesn't appear to be easily removed so it'll likely stay shut. I'd also have to remove the pivot arms from the top of the body and replace them. Not saying I won't do it.....but you have given me reason to take a second look. An operating tailgate would be pretty nice....... 2
Randy D Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Warren, This is going to be cool to follow. You have some unique pieces to work with! Randy 2
Jürgen M. Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Looks like an interesting build! A functional tailgate would surely be cool but you could just hinge it up at the top corners They way it is on the Autocar would be quite adventurous but a challenge! Can't wait to see more! 👍 2
Pete68 Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Warren count me in for this one. I think you might have a old Illini cab. 1
Warren D Posted November 21, 2024 Author Posted November 21, 2024 Well, I made the decision to go ahead and make an operable tailgate. In the process of removing the attached one, it's no longer usable so I'll be making a new one from scratch using the Autocar one as a pattern. Filler is curing after which there will be some sanding and more filler. 7
Warren D Posted November 25, 2024 Author Posted November 25, 2024 Tailgate is almost done, just need to add the attachment points at the top. 5

BK9300 Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 Got to love scratch building! Sure is handy when the kit parts are lacking in detail. 2
Warren D Posted November 28, 2024 Author Posted November 28, 2024 I have the lower tailgate capture "hooks" fabbed and installed. Note that these are not latches, ie, no moving parts. The way this tailgate operates is more like a guillotine, it slides down into place and these hooks just act to capture the bottom of the tailgate. Next will be the upper attach mounts on the tailgate along with getting the linkage and it's mounts. Everything needs to be in the right position for the tailgate to function properly. 2
leafsprings Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 The cab looks to be a Frontier Resin piece which usually require some fender reshaping. Nice to see this one being built, should be a great match with the dump body. 1
BK9300 Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 This tailgate opening mechanism is ingenious - be watching how you replicate it. 1
Warren D Posted November 29, 2024 Author Posted November 29, 2024 We have an operable tailgate! I used the pivots that I cut off after thinning them down a little. I could have easily made new ones but these already had the nut/washer detail and I didn't have to guess at the pivot locations. It's critical that both sides pull the same so the next challenge will be once the body is on the chassis, to make sure both side links are the same. (Could be each one might need to be just a little different but won't know that for a while.) Next will be the mounting blocks for the dump body but I think I'll jump on the cab/chassis and make sure the location for the body mounts will work. 5
Pete68 Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 Great job on the functional tailgate looks good Warren 1
