WillyBilly Posted January 23 Posted January 23 So I had an extra body lying around and apparently talking with my Dremel about a play date with one of my kits. I did this with a boxy chevy, so this seems easier. Sort of..... Funny how the door is to scale, yet the rear window seems big. I have not glued the back to the front till I figure out what is out of whack. The roof line is another place for concern. I could not cut the donor roof any far back as the main roof was as far back as I could go before it turned downward to the back window. I actually cut that right on the line where the curve started. I think between a little heat, and some putty, I can make the mismatched roof line disappear. I may have to cut the door frames from the roof to get things aligned. All of this, and shaky hands. Good times.... I am not sure what the color will be. I was thinking about painting it white, or light metallic blue. It will be a W/T package as I already have the Iceman base grill. 8
SSNJim Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) Good luck to you! I've actually got a 1984 crew cab in progress, and I found the below website to be an invaluable asset. It has all sorts of information of almost any GM vehicle since the beginning of time . I used it to get accurate dimensions for my truck. There's also ordering, technical and option information. I will generally go to this site for information when I build a GM vehicle (rare, but it does happen). GM Vehicle Information Kits This is the section for the 1996 Chevrolet Truck. If it doesn't have the data you seek, look at some of the other years of that body style. The content of the PDFs do seem to vary from year-to-year, so check 1988 to the end of the model run. 1992 looked interesting too. You should be able to get accurate dimensions from one of them. 1996 Chevrolet Truck I'll be watching your build. Edited January 24 by SSNJim
Steve H Posted January 24 Posted January 24 This will be interesting Billy. To my eye, it looks like the front, and rear edges of the rear door window frame need to be wider. That would make the rear window opening smaller and “close” to correct I think. It also looks like maybe if you took a very small wedge shape from the bottom of the back door (maybe 0.5mm) and taper to nothing at the top, that should tilt the “extra cab” portion down at the top and help the roof line? So vertically at the front of the extra cab door. It’s hard to tell from the photos… Not sure if that makes sense? 1

I think once the two are mated at the door seam, the out of dimension roof line, and line in the back window will look better. There is defiantly a lump where the original C pillar was.

The first, and most common was the crew cab boxy GMC from the Deserter kit as you mentioned That gave me the most problems due to being the first time. Then I did a three-door suburban with two Jimbo Jimmys 3
WillyBilly Posted January 28 Author Posted January 28 I had some time to get a little bit done to the cab. I had already glued it together, so it was time for some support ribs for the roof. Now the body work begins. 4
WillyBilly Posted January 28 Author Posted January 28 The roof is mudded, and the interior tub is extended. Please ignore the interior tub. I will figure something out. Maybe some limo tint on the rear windows. 1
WillyBilly Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 (edited) Did some sanding today. Not much in the way of excitement, but I am starting to see the end result in what I have done so far. Filled in a couple places and continue sanding tomorrow. You can start to see the finished height of the ribs. I may go down a thou or two more, but no more than that. milo1303s Posted January 29 Posted January 29 (edited) The B and C pillar of the rear door needs to be wider for the window and I see a curve to the rear of the cab is different on the 4 door or am I crazy !! sorry not nit pickin It looks great anyway !! Edited January 29 by milo1303s
WillyBilly Posted February 1 Author Posted February 1 Not much to report. Put some primer on it to see where I was at. I have a bit more work. Might give it a guide coat to help level everything out. 6
WillyBilly Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Progress is slow, but steady. 4X4 flares from Few Sprues Loose. 3
Steve H Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Looks like it’s coming along Billy. 4 door, long box, dually, now THAT is a real truck….

WillyBilly Posted February 20 Author Posted February 20 Tires and wheels showed up. I was going to slam it, but then I saw dually wheels. Oh well 3
WillyBilly Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 I worked on the suspension and the height of the crew cab and got it in primer along with my plow truck. 4

WillyBilly Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 I was able to get some models painted today. 5 to be exact. The dually will be two tone. Still deciding on the top color, but I knew the lower would be white. And the plow truck got some green to match the 1:1 version in my driveway. Also building a base work truck with a 4.3 v6, the Baja bug, and a couple stalled projects, 4x4 Nova wagon called Grape Ape followed by a quigly 4x4 conversion chevy van I painted a few years back. 1
WillyBilly Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 I got the second color, and clear on this week. I was thinking about blue and white but decided on copper and white with matte copper wheels. A little bleed I guess I can fix with a stripe. Maybe orange. 1
