Rattlecan Dan Posted April 11 Posted April 11 This is going to be a fine trophy piece. You're giving it great attention.
ismaelg Posted April 13 Author Posted April 13 Hello, Shhh, I am wowking vewy vewy slow. I don't want to get stung by a wasp. Thanks, Ismael
Big John Posted April 14 Posted April 14 You've already been bitten by the bug... don't know what they gave you for the spring loaded body hold down handles but here is a reference pic that shows how they work.
ismaelg Posted April 17 Author Posted April 17 Hello, Very slow but progress nonetheless... Habemus Colorus! Thanks, Ismael 2
ismaelg Posted April 20 Author Posted April 20 Hello, I was hoping the wash would lighten up but it turned out way too dark. Drybrushed metallic gun metal. Looks good but way too dark. Will let it sit overnight and will try to carefully rub it out. Worst case I may need to repaint it... Untouched left side. Thanks, Ismael
Pierre Rivard Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Have you considered brushing on dry pigments (graphite or charcoal)? It's easy to apply and wipe off excess with a humid Q-tip.
ismaelg Posted April 21 Author Posted April 21 Hello, Do you believe me if I say I'm happy so far? Body is not fixed. Just in place for the picture. Thanks, Ismael 4
ismaelg Posted April 21 Author Posted April 21 Hello, I am happy with the stain, the nick and the rust spot in this massive axle beam. Solid and fine, but certainly not pristine. It has seen at least 500 miles of action. Thanks, Ismael 6
ismaelg Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 Hello, Not much progress because of life important milestones, like my son's wedding coming up on Saturday! But I want to stand corrected: I previously reported Corvette Millennium yellow was pretty close to the Wasp Yellow formula from Michael using Mr. Hobby paints. While the bottles look very similar, here is a test with both, same pack of spoons, same primer, same clear in harsh bright tropical sunlight. Thanks, Ismael
JimmyB Posted April 24 Posted April 24 First off, congratulations on your son's wedding. I've been enjoying your WIP on the Wasp. You're doing a great job on this kit! Did the kit come with the rear view mirror or did you scratch build it?
ismaelg Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 Thanks Jimmy! The kit comes with a beautiful rearview mirror. It is quite delicate and fragile so I am treating it very gently. Thanks, Ismael
ismaelg Posted May 2 Author Posted May 2 Hello, There are 2 days of work here, and I am at 20% or less decal completion. These pinstripes are a pain. Have I ever mentioned I hate decals? By the way, my strategy for this build has a serious flaw but it is too late. My original intention is to paint the black trim AFTER the decals were clearcoated. This is because I plan to use acrylics for the black as those are more forgiving to errors and corrections. Too late now but I think I should have painted the black trim with lacquer before the decals. I have no choice now other than follow my original plan but that is a self inflicted bumpy road course ahead. Thanks, Ismael 1
magicmustang Posted May 2 Posted May 2 (edited) Outstanding work so far. Included one of my favorite pics from the Indy 500 winners Museaum photo shoot. Edited May 2 by magicmustang
ismaelg Posted May 2 Author Posted May 2 What a gorgeous picture! Haven't seen it before. Do you have it bigger? I see: Marmon, one of Franchitti's car (2010?), AJ Foyt '61 Mears '79, Maserati '39-'40, Al Unser's '70 Parnelli Jones '63, Arie Luyendyk's '90, Maurie Rose 47 or 48 Johnny Rutherford's '80 (not sure if it was called "yellow submarine" back then, or if that started later with Mears) behind it is Foyt's 64? hard to see but I think I see Jim Clark's '65 Lotus that big #8 in the back is most likely the 1912 National? I also see a Miller but can't tell from the pic. Is that Foyt's 77 way back and Mario's '69 in front of the big #8? What else do you see?

I count 3 rows of 11 cars, I think.
ismaelg Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 (edited) Hello, What a fight! Another full day on the other side. At the end, the only casualty was this section pointed here. It curled and self destroyed. The extra decal sheet I ordered (to fix the hood I messed up) should take care of it. Thanks, Ismael Edited May 3 by ismaelg 2
Pierre Rivard Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Oh boy, these pinstripes zig zagging around or over body seams and features. Just being off by 0.5 mm would be very visible. They look absolutely perfect. I could not survive that un-medicated! 🥃
Mark W Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Ismael, what you have done with this kit is amazing. I can really appreciate your attention to detail on the body. A badly prepared body can ruin an otherwise good kit. But you had a great amount of preparation on this printed body. The final result will be something to be proud of, I’m sure. Thanks for sharing with us.
ismaelg Posted May 4 Author Posted May 4 Hello, Pinstriping as far as consuming all the first decal sheet. Whatever is still pending on the pinstriping; center of the hood and a short piece at the bottom, will be provided by the second decal sheet that has been ordered. What a fight! This is not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, I don't have a heart! 🙂 Thanks, Ismael
ismaelg Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 Hello, After the pinstripe ordeal, which is not over yet, these 2 tail fin decals were the easiest ever! 🤣 Thanks, Ismael 2
ismaelg Posted May 6 Author Posted May 6 Hello, One down (99% done), 3 to go. Good thing I'm not into 18 wheelers 🤣 This is all one piece. Thanks, Ismael 3
