Monty Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I'm amazed at the number of choices we have from aftermarket tire manufacturers (resin and 3D) but was curious which paint you guys would say is the best for replicating the shade of 1:1 tires. Years ago, my go-to paint for this kind of thing was Model Master Black Chrome Trim paint (#2735), but it's pretty scarce these days, so I'm curious what else is out there. If you can post pics showing tires painted with whatever you happened to recommend, along with the P/N of the paint, that would be greatly appreciated.
johnyrotten Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I looked into this a while back, most leaned towards tamiya rubber black (xf-85) or vallejo tire black (71.315). Nato black is another choice that showed up repeatedly. There's a few real good threads on the topic, and a ton of tricks to make them "pop". Different shade for the tread vs sidewalls, and washes in the treads ect. 2
bobss396 Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I use Tamiya NATO black and the newer TS-82 tire black. I also like Mr. Surfacer black primer, I shot some Mr. Surfacer matte clear over that. 1
slusher Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I primed mine in Tamiya primer and painted it whit Krylon short cuts coms out like a satin finish.. 1
Swamp Dog Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Rust- Oleum flat black. been using it for years.. rims were sprayed with Rust - Oleum # 7718830 Bright Coat Chrome ... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079K8K4C6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 2
stitchdup Posted April 12 Posted April 12 tamiya rubber black. the brush version is just as good as the spray cans 3
stavanzer Posted April 12 Posted April 12 My Go to used to be Pactra Hot Rod Primer, but I use Nato Black and Ordinary Black Primer, now. Using different colours on the sidewalls and treads helps to look more realistic on Street Driven Cars & Trucks.
Steamboat Posted April 14 Posted April 14 I like the cheapo rattle can flat black from Lowes, followed by a misting of Pledge on the sidewalls.
TonyK Posted April 14 Posted April 14 I've used cheap flat black primer and Testors flat black and Tamiya rubber spray. Swear I don't see a big difference. 2
vincen47 Posted April 14 Posted April 14 (edited) This is Tamiya Rubber Black from a spray can. Then, just a touch of charcoal black weathering powder on the sidewalls and tread to bring out the details. Edited April 15 by vincen47 2 1
