Technics Posted June 1 Posted June 1 This kit came in a bundle and ended up being completely free once I sold off the associated cars which were not of interest! The kit looks excellently detailed and being a modern release I’m hoping it’s perfect to assemble even if it’s not a Tamiya.. I have read mixed reviews of it however... It can´t be worse then the Lotus Esprit anyway! The box art livery is ok but I thought about doing a more modern and exciting ( to me ) feeling. - single color Ford Liquid Blue with matte clear or pearl stripes Dual centered stripes that are stuble on a car is something very seldom I would consider so it could be the way forward. They land on some horribly difficult air inlet areas so I’m not certain. 3
Technics Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 (edited) I started fusing the main body parts together. There’s a few seam lines to address and tricky surfaces to clean once you join the main body parts. It didn’t help that I was a bit sloppy with the CA so there’s more clean up then there should have been. Also scribing clean the part lines. I bet the Tamiya kit is perfect but it is not the LM version which is ultimately more exciting to me. I plowed through a bunch of steps in the manual fusing parts into assemblies for ease of painting and detailing. It’s no where near as good as a kit as the Land Rover III. German vs American Revell? Technics Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 Working my way through primer and sanding, some dry fitting for motivation. Looks fantastic as a package. Maybe it’s just me but I can’t stand Revell Germany boxes. Completely unintuitive and unusable during the build process for me. Small side slot opening, parts sloshing around. I disguised a useable box as the ford project instead 😂🤠 Some more improvement parts arrived, just because it’s fun. Upgrades are something I never really understood until recently but it is really fun I’ve learned during the lotus build… and some of the upgrades can bring drastic improvements. If it feels exciting and propels the build forward I’m all for it now! Diffuser, fuel caps, air hose, wheel. I got it just for the diffuser but the rest won’t hurt if I manage to get them into the model nicely. 4
Technics Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 Clipped off the front air cardinals and trued up the front not to have soft undercut features revell made. I cut away and fused in the aftermarket diffuser. Mated the chassis to body for mock-up, a first - window trims came pre painted. But bizarrely slightly transparent / worn out decal feeling.. think it’ll work though. Love how it looks!! Wheels will need a slight offset during final assembly. I will begin to drill and cut away necessary cavities I find based from photos I don’t know what I was thinking shooting paint before studying references more 😃. 5
Technics Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 Primed rear section of chassis in black. Cut out front air intakes Drilled out some front holes on the body based of references Drilled out center section of fuel inlet for some depth 4
absmiami Posted June 1 Posted June 1 This is really gonna turn out great - and the Decalcas parts set is nice - i’ve been getting a bunch of their stuff - Revell of Germany has always done 24th scale - which is nice - and their boxes have always sucked - for years … 1
Technics Posted June 2 Author Posted June 2 (edited) I find the colour so very attractive, somehow understated in its matte finish I feel like keeping it. The body prepping wasn’t perfect but i hope the overall build quality / gloss will keep your attention. I’m content! 3 layers of paint straight from the bottle. “water” based paint this version, still has a door but not harsh. Edited Friday at 05:38 by Technics Edited June 2 by Technics 5
Rattlecan Dan Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Such nice work is great to see. Very inspiring. Enviable as well. 1
SpeedAndViolence Posted June 16 Posted June 16 Absolutely will be watching this... Been interested in getting both this and the Tamiya kit, but I too prefer the LM version. Looking forward to seeing more!
Technics Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 @SpeedAndViolence Thank you! Yeah I’m a sucker for race cars with and without livery! I continued with a bit of fun. Hood intake inlets wrapped in carbon fiber decal and photo etch mimicking im guessing a intercooler / radiator. Might kick back the silver a bit more if it feels too bright compared to the rest. Or paint it darker gunmetal of sorts. Ironically it’s actually painted with metal paint the original raw photoetch showed an undesirable hairline surface crack when I did a panel wash to bring out some detail after the metal paint. Nearly identical the paint vs the photo etch. Body shows hints of shape that isn’t 100% what the real car is like but i think as a clean build it will look exciting due to the dramatic. The carbon isn’t perfect will likely leave raw or might matte clear it. 3
Technics Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 Can’t get much better out of the can without polishing. We’ll see if I go down that route. I’m usually “over it” by the time that stage comes. Having never properly polished out a finish.. I just fear sanded through edges. However I did buy a new micro polisher and some automotive compounds so maybe I will give it a go with the new toys after some test runs on scrap pieces. I feel the colour is phenomenal. Very pleased. Freshly vaccumed, newly layed overspray paper, I mist the room with water from a bottle in an attempt to land anything airborne. My process was one light coat. Two wet coats with wet sanding 3000 grit between all, approximately 30 minutes between each. I’m spraying quite close to the model itself, constant moving with intent. I got two drips which may or may not be noticeable. It’ll have some track soot so it might get solved without much work. 3
Technics Posted August 12 Author Posted August 12 (edited) @Dragline @iamsuperdan @Zen Thanks guys! Mainly just a mock up for myself to see it not floating in space. Nevermind the part gaps or stance, No real physical progress there. Mainly a visual to help me mentally process what I will do next. I will cut and polish the “easy” reflection capturing surfaces. The rest will be varying track use soot. Fun side by side with some vintage metal. Not sure they’re the right to scale to be seen together. Just a neat progress picture I thought. Plan is to have the wheels in satin bronze. Edited August 12 by Technics 4
SpeedAndViolence Posted August 12 Posted August 12 Man... That's looking fantastic! Makes me want to start mine! Thanks for sharing your progress!
Technics Posted September 29 Author Posted September 29 Been enjoying some detailing that will be visible through the rear decklid at some angles. Everything’s still a wip and needs more paint and material as I work through it. Semi realistic but not loosing sleep over accuracy. Raw Tamiya carbon decal sheet for areas on the motor intake and exterior intake scoop, brushed on and rattle can coated, medical tape for the headers primed, painted and washed. Lots more coming. 3
Technics Posted October 12 Author Posted October 12 I Continued to slowly work away on secondary details that will barely be seen, a few sessions got me inspired about the project again enough to have the courage to begin working the clear coat. I wet sanded, cut and polished one area seen below. I will work my way through the model slowly and re visit areas as there’s improvement that can be made, this is my second polish job and I’m thrilled what results come out of doing it. Quite tricky as you can imagine there’s no flat surfaces. 3
Technics Posted Friday at 05:47 PM Author Posted Friday at 05:47 PM I spent a good 4 modelling sessions 2-3 hrs each polishing, sanding, cleaning with q tips and toothpicks. At one point I nearly lost it and stripped it back to fossil fuels. I’m really content now though! My main mistake was going too heavy on the pressure first session leaving some deep scratches which I couldn’t buff out. As this is not a huge slab sided vehicle but instead tight complex small surfaces it’s easy to burn through layers of clear, paint, etc which I did and anticipated but didn’t want to leave the project without trying to save it all. About half way I did some touch up tests and it looked good still so I commuted to trying to make it “100%” or as close I could get. Definitely one of the the most intimidating things I’ve done so far. Next up is detailing with trim, carbon, miscellaneous metal, decals, dirt. I’m stoked again. Wheels are a bit lighter then I anticipated but I’ll give them a wash and brake dust 🙂. 3
TransAmMike Posted Saturday at 12:10 AM Posted Saturday at 12:10 AM Very pretty color and paint job MM!! 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted Saturday at 02:27 AM Posted Saturday at 02:27 AM I sho' nuff do love that color... 1
Technics Posted yesterday at 06:01 AM Author Posted yesterday at 06:01 AM (edited) Surprised myself with a successful night of CF carbon work. I made the parts from tape masks transfered onto Tamiya decal paper. It’s incredible what setting and softening solutions can do. Far from perfect of course. Shadows and crevices hiding my sins. It took me three separate sessions to attempt the rear wing which is not finished yet, nor is it pictured. Plan was to gloss clear everything but the race car has mostly satin, raw carbon which looks nicer imo but the gloss will hide imprefections more, and it’s a road car. I’ll make a test of satin first. Put in some hours brush painting the body cavities and beginning to work the details. There’s a good amount of PE details, so far just the did brakes are PE, untreated, un weathered for now. Edited yesterday at 06:02 AM by Technics 1
