You did a great job with that!!! To be fair, the tooling was originally designed in 1967 (and updated through 1972 and beyond). It’s complex and a bit fiddly, but it does have a lot of detail. It was basically nearly state of the art for its time.

BUT , , I have done that exact mod back in the early '80s with the MPC kits available back then and it was pretty strait forward. 

And it looked pretty good too. No pics from then but it's not exactly uncommon in 1/1 apparently.

Maybe one day they'll clone the early body, and bring it back to the more attractive first iteration. I'd be in.

It is my firm belief that the 1972 Facelift of the Jeepster helped to kill it off. Sales were not great in 1971, but the squared off nose destroyed the Jeep "Look" and made it indistinguishable from the Bronco, and Blazer of the same year.

The "Bad Idea Fairy" seemed to spend most of her time in the Corporate Business Office and Design Studios at AMC in the 1970s.

Jeep was the Golden Goose and AMC flirted with various ways of trying to kill it off over the years too.

It makes me Sad because the CJ-5/CJ-7, Javelin and AMX are some of my favorite cars.

I would be game for a 68-71 grill style by the time the 72’s came out it was a face only a mother could love

Something to keep in mind,,

To backdate the kit to the earlier grille style you need not only the grille and hood but the fenders and inner fenders as well. 

All the sheet metal from the cowl forward is completely different.

I’ll be the weird guy who says I actually like the ‘72 front end!  I always thought the early Jeepster was trying too hard to look like a CJ… but that’s just me.

As I pointed out in an earlier post with pictures of the kit body and a resin body from Olson Bros that is based on the early Jeepster.

Is Olsen Bros doing that body currently Mike ? 

I was under the impression that they closed down shop except for the one bro trying to get caught up on paid back orders and offering a very limited selection of small stuff.

To the best of my knowledge the body is no longer available, I was lucky enough to get one when they were making them.

Well, if this isn't the most screaming 3D or resin opportunity in the bidness, I don't know what is. 

AMC was not looking for extra work or investement at the time, so I'd wager most of whatever needs changing would happen at a convenient panel line.

As for, "What in blue hell were they thinking...?"  AMC was probably looking at other entries in the market (Bronco, Scout, rumored Blazer) thinking they needed an easy way to keep interest in the product going. Since that modern look was working for the others... why not for them? 

Strikes me much akin to Studebaker adding the notch style Thunderbird roof and Benzo grille to the Hawk/Starliner to make the GT.

That is exactly what happened according to a story I read online.

But, instead of standing out, they lost their distinct identity amongst the others, IMHO.
