backyardtrains Posted Friday at 02:44 AM Posted Friday at 02:44 AM I joined this forum in the hopes that I can glean some knowledge and share some of my builds. I'm mainly a model railroader in 1/29 scale but use 1/25 kits for vehicles around the layout. Nothing too super detailed as they need to be handled and moved around as needed. Eventually if I ever run out of train projects, I'd like to try scratch building a few more vehicles in 1/29. But that's a long ways off so for now the 1/25 stuff works and with some selective positioning for photos, it creates some forced perspective. As I mentioned in the question thread, my current vehicle related project is AMT Mack truck and a scratch build of a Breda bus (I'll do that in 1/29). Here's a few trucks I brought along for display at the local Railroad Prototype Modelers Meet ( model display event). Kitbashed into a hi-rail truck. Nothing too fancy. Kitbashed a lumber rack, added some dents but otherwise stock kit. Pettibone Speed Swing. This is all scratch built in 1/29. These are used for moving rail and other odd pieces of equipment around. I used LEGO tires but now realize they are a bit too knobby. The boom is positional and can rotate. I have some other feed mill trucks I've built but I can't find any photos at the moment. 4
PappyD340 Posted Friday at 11:26 AM Posted Friday at 11:26 AM Welcome to the forum Craig, those are some great looking builds!!
MeatMan Posted Friday at 01:36 PM Posted Friday at 01:36 PM Nice looking builds! Welcome to the forum.
Bainford Posted Friday at 04:20 PM Posted Friday at 04:20 PM Welcome aboard, Craig. Good looking trucks there displaying some very fine weathering.
backyardtrains Posted Friday at 06:41 PM Author Posted Friday at 06:41 PM I found some shots of the feed mill trucks. I had one photo to go off of and was attempting to build them in 30 days as part of a 30 day, $30 build challenge. I didn't do either... 😆 Prototype photo of one of the feed trucks. My attempt. Not perfect but it gets the general idea across. This was basically scratch built except for the cab. For my first attempts at a vehicle kitbash it went okay. And again they are background models so not 100% detailed. 1
backyardtrains Posted Friday at 06:44 PM Author Posted Friday at 06:44 PM Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm definitely not going to enter any of my builds into a vehicle contest, nor hit the level of detail that I've seen on some scratch built projects here but I feel like I can do a decent replica to get the general story across. The vehicles are only one part of the larger picture of the railroad including structures (all scratch built) and eventually scenery.

Mark, Thanks. I don't have much vehicles on hand at the moment. Here's a work in progress. This a a boxcar I weathered a while back with oils, acrylics. Here's a couple buildings completed scratch built. They live outside 24/7. They still need to be placed on the layout permanently but for now they are weathering naturally. These are pretty small at only about 2' x 2'. Mostly styrene, foamed PVC board, acrylic for windows on the left building. Still need to cut them for the one on the right. Anyways hope that's a good introduction!
Mattblack Posted Saturday at 09:25 PM Posted Saturday at 09:25 PM Those are some great models, I like to visit model railway shows here in the UK to get ideas for dioramas and weathering, and to get scenic materials and tools from the trade stands. Oh, and just because I like model railways as well... 1

Oh, and just because I like model railways as well... It's funny because there's lots of model railroaders that steal ideas from vehicle and military modelers and claim to be the latest and greatest innovation. 😂 The model railroad community "discovered" Future about 3 years ago. Wow this is so cool, I can't believe I did know about this stuff, revolutionary to modeling. Oh, you mean the stuff military and vehicle modelers have been using this for over a couple of decades? 🙄
