Corvette.Jeff Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Today i was getting the 'vette ready for the winter and all that, she hasnt been started in a few months so i figured id start her up and run the fluids , and let her clear out her throaght It took a bit to let the battery build up enough juice to let her start, but when she did it brought back all the memories of corvettes i have. I think i pissed of a couple of my neighbors though, right now im on open headers one neighbor did come outside and compliment me on the way she sounded though, gah i cant wait to get her back on the road

samdiego Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (edited) I think the differing firing order of the Ford small block makes it sound a little better when overcammed, but the nastiest street lope of my youth award goes to my buddy Skip's '65 goat. Fenderwell headers on a 421 under the large tri-power. You could count the power strokes. It didn't rumble, it was a rift in the gates of hell. Jacked straight up enough to get M/T M-50 15s under an uncut wheel opening. It was seriously startling to the average drivers around us in '76. Edited October 15, 2009 by samdiego
envious8420 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 i love the sound of a well built and turboed b16 (honda)@ 7500r's not that i would ever own 1 but just the same.
Greg Cullinan Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 For me its a 1200 Harley with straight pipes Then the cam like Dave mentioned.
BigBlockLyle Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Here's my little SBC purring. I made this video about a year ago and just now uploaded it. My truck dies because it's bad gas. Thanks Benjamin.
E St. Kruiser50 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 NOTHIN' LIKE THE SOUND OF A "RUMPY MOTOR" RUNNIN THROUGH A SET OF HEADERS. Readin' your post brought back memories of my "ol' Hemi", runnin' through headers and a pair of Corvair mufflers. Nothin' to um', so you got a "Sweet Rumble" at idle. Hiway Patrol followed me home one day and made my dad real happy. Asked me to raise the hood - he said change your mufflers

I had mine out over the weekend for the neighbors to enjoy the sound of the exhaust the smell of a little race gas. None of them complained but i have a feeling they don't love it. LOL

LOL I have two favorites, a 426 Hemi & 12 cyl. Packard Merlin engine, like in the P-51 Mustang. Round engines, like a Pratt & Whitney 2800 (F4U Corsair) come close.
69*Goat Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Jeff: Where in Texas do you live??? I am in Houston, and my GTO never gets put up for the winter....... It runs best when it is a little cool outside

It runs best when it is a little cool outside I live about six and a half hours away in little ol' Granbury,Texas, its right below fort worth. Im only putting the 'vette up this winter because shes still out of comision, plus i've never driven on slick roads and i dont think my parents would apreciate me calling them telling them that i overpowered my car and wrapped it around a telephone pole

Thanks Benjamin. She sounds good! iT kinda sounds like my El Camino i used to have. but my elky only had a 305 in it and a one and a half inch exhaust on it.

Thats one thing that always got me about a ford engine, you can have two identical engines with the same go fast goodies on em, and theyll sound totally different
BigGary Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (edited) Nice GTO. I can't help but wonder, is that picture at your work or your neighborhood? I'm farther north than both of you. I'm 175 miles NW of Ft. Worth, 50 miles NW of Wichita Falls. You think its cold in the winter in Granbury, try here in Vernon. Next year we'll expect both of you to be here for "Summer's Last Blast", 2nd weekend of August. 3 days up to your eyeballs in vintage hot rods, muscle cars, motorcycles, and even vintage farm equipment. 1,200 registered pre-78 street machines. Dragline Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 In the mid 80's I owned my ONLY Hot Rod which was a 71 vega with a 383 stroker in it. Tubbed and all that... Every weekend I'd start it up to go cruise and my neihboors would just groan. I waited till it was all warmed up and maybe chuck a rev or two. I'd never lay a holeshot where I lived though. But at the corner where I'd turn to hit the highway, I'd always always bang at least two gears. The car got too notorious and I had to get rid of it, but for 3 years I was almost king of the street wherever I went. The car was on eBay a few months ago. Now it has a blower. It was too hairy with the Jetted down Dominator on it. I cannot imagine what it's like now. It had a pretty rad cam in it and a hopped up T-10 4 speed. I don't think I could have run an auto the way it was. But at about 4,500 RPM it purred like a kitten and if I blipped the throttle those MT Sportsmans would go up in a blaze of glory. God I miss that car. I'll find a pic at my Mums and post it sometime. The SBC and you. Making HP for over 60 years. Bob F
moparmagiclives Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 With great power comes great responsibility. Nailhead there is NO substitute Circle City Model A Can't say much for the sound, but a nail head in her best dress is hard to beat for looks, next to a flatty or a 348/409 that is. I used to think my 64 falcon with the over cammed 289 ( now its a 351w, but i havent fired it off yet ) and glass packs sounded sweet. That is untill a customer came in this summer and gave me a ride in his 67 gtx, 440 shifting at 10,050 with electric cut outs. Man was that sick. Here's one I bet most havent heard. Do a search for ported rotory motors ( probably find videos from japan ). If its extensive enough, they lope like a top fueler when the rotor passes both ports at idel, then wind up like a dremmel tool when the pedal drops.
Dragline Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I learned to appreciate the Rotary when a Puerto Rican fella I hired began working at the Auto Zone I ran. He took me for a ride in his hopped up 81 Accord with a Rotary in it and I was impressed. All the same, unless they are sub 10.5 cars, they wouldn't touch the Vega. That, and let's face it, the buzzing is not attractive. This is about the SBC purrrrrr after all. Not that import ######. Bob F Still driving, and fixing AMERICAN!!!!!!!

My second car ever was a Mazda RX-2.....(not mine below) mine was orange. That little thing would flat get it for what it was. It was funny to open the hood and let people see the two distributors.... Edited October 16, 2009 by 69*Goat
torinobradley Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Here, we have some over and under highways downtown and I used to love opening up my '68 Torino running through them with the windows down. The wail of the small block Ford screaming at 5500 RPM echoing off all that steel and concrete is pure adrenaline! 289, .30 over, .478 Isky, Hooker, Holley 600 double and 3:89s = lots of fun and quite a few jaws contacting floorboards... Especially when they find out I'm under 300cid... I do love a good lope. My Torino lopes very nice. I had a '76 Vega with a hot-rodded 4 with the cam, carb and headers and that one had a healthy lope. Not what you'd expect from a Vega.
BigGary Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Wildest rotary I ever heard was in Tulsa, OK in the mid 90s. It was a RX-3 with a 2 rotor and a 550 holley. It spun 8" slicks with ease. It sounded funny though. Gary
Corvette.Jeff Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 every engine has it's unique sounds. not all V-8's sound the same and not all 4 or 6 cylinders do either. some are noisy and some are quiet, some are loud and some have truly unique sounds like a Viper V-10 or a Subaru flat-4. i love when you can feel an engine right straight to your bones. anyone who's ever seen a Top Fuel car make a pass and been close enough will understand that feeling i've also been in shops while they dyno tuned drag bikes and that's an experience all in itself. that's the kind of loud you can feel right up through the concrete floor and right through you. 14k RPM worth of tuned exhaust pipe loudness. one of the coolest sounds i've ever heard was my former employers boat running wide open on the water. one big-block Chevy flat out is cool, but two at the same time singing side by side? that's pure V-8 stereo! Dave My uncle used to have a "drag boat" he would race on the water, it wasnt a full fleadged drag boat, just a boat shell with a decked out 454bbc with a set of zoomies i dont remember all he had on it because i was about 8 at the time, i think he wound up selling it to a friend and his kid sunk it another time he wanted a nascar sprint truck to race at a local track, so he built one out of a 80 something dakota I think he wound up with a 426 in it, he had to cut out the firewall just so the distributor would fit! Then there was the rail that he built from what i rememmber of it it ran in the high 5's
