This is one of the pictures from the latest model trade show. I came across it on another model forum I belong to.

http://public.fotki.com/SteveG26/i-hobby-e...9/dscn0006.html By my count, it looks like they're offering 119 acrylic colors. That appears to be theLindberg logo on the airbrushes too.

Anybody know who the paint manufacturer is? An "insider" on another board said it's definitely not Testors.

I wonder whose airbrushes they're selling...

Anybody here got some inside information?

I was sitting around recently and was thinking to myself "wow, Lindberg really needs to sell some acrylic paint and airbrushes".

Not.

Why Lindberg? Why another brand of acrylic paint? What makes this better than the myriad other choices already on the market? I don't get it. Unless this is some kind of miracle paint with miracle properties, it seems like one of those "General Motors/Chrysler/Cerberus" kinds of "marketing strategies" where the people making the decisions are grasping at straws.

I'd like to see the people who came up with this new line of paint/airbrushes stand in front of the panel on "Shark Tank" and answer a few basic questions! Prove me wrong and make me a believer. Or not B)

The air brushes look like the Badger line, but they've been copied before.

its dutch boy paint or a variation of it.

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought of teaming up with them for hobby paints. Do you have a reliable source for that? (no names if the person would prefer not to be identified).

I agree with you. Given the dominance of the big dogs (Tamiya and Testors) it might be hard to convince a hobby shop owner to give up some floor space for another acrylic. Monogram/Revell came out with their own acrylic line several years ago; their marketing ploy was fewest mils of paint required for full coverage. Great concept, but it didn't last long. Gunze Sangyo acrylics, my favorite line, are virtually impossible to find in the US anymore. That said, I'll still mail order a couple bottles of Lindberg's new paint just to see how good it is.

As far as the airbrushes go, swing a dead cat in the average hobby shop and you'll hit a stack of Badger and/or Paasche guns. Wanna step up? Iwata's got you covered. Wanna save some coins? Harbor Freight sells 6-packs of airbrushes at ridiculous prices.

If I were on the board of directors at Lindberg, I would have voted against these ideas and asked that the money be put into new and better models. They've proven they can put out good kits: '53 Ford, '61 Impala, '66 Chevelle etc. They need to quit wasting time on the old Pyro molds and find the niche cars that people would enjoy. Couple thoughts off the top of my head: '68 Chevelle. Hasn't been one in some time & AMT's '69 is a turd. '70-'73 Firebird Formula. MPC's molds were retooled for the late 70s Firebirds & I doubt the current owners will ever change them back. Still in the Pontiac vein - '70 Grand Prix, '73 Grand Am. Lastly, 83-84 Hurst Olds. Use a photo of the '83 on the box and I'd bet they'd fly off the shelves.

Just my humble, long-winded opinion...

I don't know about the paints being a terrible idea. Model Master is dominated by military colors, as is Tamiya, Polly S and Vallejo. Citidel / Games Workshop is focused on fantasy figures. If Lindberg were to offer a line of paints with lots of accurate model car colors, they might be able to find an unfilled niche.

I don't Know, another line of paints my LHS can have out of stock, might be a great idea.

I agree with Monty. The money for the paint would have been much better spent on some new/different models.

I can't find anything on the 'net regarding these paints, so I can only surmise that they'll offer some standard gloss colors (reds, blues , greens etc) and a lot of flats. From the pics I saw of the trade show, Lindberg apparently offers a substantial number of non-automotive kits, military and otherwise.

I'd love to be wrong, though...

Looks like my pessimism was unfounded. Here's what I found on their website: http://www.lindberg-models.com/model-paints2.html Roughly 25 gloss paints suitable for car finishes. No brand-specific colors like Plum Crazy or Hugger Orange, but it looks like a decent range.

Wait a minute... #3710 under car colors - The name is sapphire pearl, but the color chip indicates it's going to be reddish. Did I miss a memo re sapphires?

Absolutely. And, with Testors and Tamiya both already offering excellent acrylic paint lines, I can't see too many shop owners being anxious to tie up more floor space with a rack for yet another one.

Perhaps they have nefarious plans to get their kits into a mainstream chain store like Target, Toys R US etc and want a full line of paints and tools to sweeten the deal. Testors definately has an advantage over some of the other paints since they have tools, several lines of paint, sand paper and occassionally model kits.

As far as hobby shops I could see a some providing space for part of the line, like the car colors, a rack of 20-30 colors would only take up about a cubic foot of space and would offer something different.

Very few hobby shops stock the whole Model Master Acryl line, they just have the basics. Acryl also has a fantasy and marine line of paints but I've only seen one shop carry those. Even fewer stock MM and Polly S (both owned by Testors).

and Monty, Saphire should be blue in my reality too.

Saphires can come in all kinds of colors from pink to black, even clear. Blue is just the most popular color.

Aaron is on the right track, Lindberg is definately trying to compete with Testors by having a full line of products. They are going to have a line of tools including a cool new knife that uses replaceable #11 blades and won't roll of your workbench and into your foot. Look to the left of the paints in the photo below and you'll see some samples.

BTW, Lindberg is far from the first to do this. Revell currently has their own line of paints, airbrushes, tools and accessories. Just check the full Revell 2009 catalog. It's all in there.

Aaron may be on to something here. I never took any business courses in college; I've never slept at a Holiday Inn Express either, but I can't imagine a company (Lindberg) making this kind of investment in product and development without having some pre-arranged outlets where it will be sold. Again, it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.... OTOH, I tried to contact them through their website to see where I could buy the paints, but I haven't received any response yet.

I based my extensive knowledge on a can of Testors spray paint. Looks like SteveG knows this subject fairly well.

For those who don't know I've been working with Lindberg as outside resource for a few years. They provided me with a guest pass for I-hobby expo. That's where I got my info from. If you check out Gregg's photos from the show I'm in there somewhere. I do know the paints aren't available yet but I'll do my best to find out when they will be available and who will be carrying them if anyone is interested.

I know there are some critics who think the paint line is a waste of money and it should be spent on the car line. FWIW, there are some things going on behind the scenes that if they work out will make a lot of you very happy campers. The seven Police Chargers and the Lawman S/S Plymouth are just the begining of the good stuff to come.

Steve, my quote - I based my extensive knowledge on a can of Testors spray paint. Looks like SteveG knows this subject fairly well. relates back to your explanation that sapphires have a number of hues. I truly thought they were blue and blue only. Thanks for bringing me up to date! I'm very interesting in trying the new paints and would appreciate it if you could keep us updated as to when and where they can be bought.
