Landspeed1 Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Hey I just found the best silver/chrome spray paint. Its Rustoleum V2115838 silver aluminum Tried it over the Rustoleum grey primer and came out great Any body know of another good chrome or polished aluminum? Shayne
Foxer Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 (edited) I've used Dupli-Color Chrome and have been surprised how well it comes out .. not Aclad, but has a use. I like it as polished stainless steel. Edited January 15, 2010 by Foxer
Casey Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 The best cast aluminum paint I've ever found is Krylon Dull Aluminum #1403: http://www.filmtools.com/krdual1grsho.html
Car Crazy 81 Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 The best Silver i'd tried so far is Valspar Silver Metallic #65052 which can be found at Lowes for $3.44 a can.Metalizers are also good just like Mike suggested.
sak Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I've used Dupli-Color Chrome and have been surprised how well it comes out .. not Aclad, but has a use. I like it as polished stainless steel. I noticed that too. I think it used to be called chrome bumper paint I beleieve. And if you mist light coats over a shiny black base, it makes a great stainless steel look.
Nick Winter Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I bought some $2 canadian tire chrome paint, it looks identical to alcalad, I have both, only use alcalad on big parts though.
steve_b Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Try the rustoleum 248652 bright coat chrome, I can get both alclad level chrome and polished aluminum finishes out of it just by changing applications. I decant and airbrush is in 3 wet coats for chrome, and 2 or 3 mist coats for aluminum. Really surprising how the finish changes with application. Airbrushing it is great, the rattle can dumps as much paint as a testors can does. Try it in a fine tipped airbrush with about 5-10lbs of air (3-5lbs with my badger 360 and it's medium tip) The aluminum is GREAT for unpolished aluminum, also, you can lay that over just about any primer or even onto bare plastic. Surface has to be REALLY smooth and polished to get them to really shine up
James W Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 The best cast aluminum paint I've ever found is Krylon Dull Aluminum #1403: That is also my favorite for cast aluminum, but I have been unable to find it lately. Thanks to your link, I will look for the new label.
Chillyb1 Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 I bought some $2 canadian tire chrome paint, it looks identical to alcalad.... Try the rustoleum 248652 bright coat chrome, I can get both alclad level chrome.... Can you guys post pictures? I'm skeptical about getting "alclad level chrome" out of a cheap spray can. If it is possible, then I really want to be doing it. Thanks.
steve_b Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I'll get you some the beginning of the week...the trick isn't in using the can, it's with airbrushing it..
larrygre Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 The best cast aluminum paint I've ever found is Krylon Dull Aluminum #1403: http://www.filmtools.com/krdual1grsho.html Hear hear! I've been using the stuff for years. Hint: Try decanting a can and airbrushing it - it goes on real nice without the "metalflake" appearance of other dull aluminum hobby paints.

Nick Winter Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 "Alclad quality" chrome spray paint, based on everything I've ever seen, is only going to happen when you use a spraycan of Alclad (it exists, though pricey). Over the years I've read dozens of posts about how XXX-brand silver paint is "just as good as Alclad" or "looks just like chrome" but whenever photos are posted it looks like any other silver paint. Correctly applied Alclad really looks like chrome, silver paint...every one I've ever seen...looks like silver paint. I never said silver paint if you read my post you'd know that, it's Chrome paint.
charlzrocks Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I gotta agree with Mark Taylor on this one, never seen a chrome paint look as good as Alclad. I myself prefer to just do out of the box bling (I'm cheap that way! LOL!)

Ddms Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) Duplicolor Chrome looks very close to kit chrome - very smooth and bright. Actually, it's a bit too bright to be realistic. But some people like that look and it's right for some models. Edited February 10, 2010 by Ddms
