Jon Cole Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Last night around 10:30 I was going down a flight of stairs at my friends house, I missed the two bottom steps and took a hell of a fall. Both legs folded up under me as I landed. I went to the hospital via ambulance. X-ray confirms right ankle is indeed broken. Left foot nothing on x-rays, I think it was hyper-extended. Nothing they can do for foot. Right ankle has a splint. I am on crutches, BIG problem as I don't have the coordination to use them. I need a wheelchair. It's not a question of if I fall down again, it a q of when. They told me to see an orthopedic doctor Monday. I will be out of work for a while. I hope my model survived! It was in it's box, not yet finished. It, and my car are still at my friends house.
Randy Kern Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Another example of a simple, everyday thing we do turning into an accident! It brings me back to a year and a half ago, when one minute I was riding my bicycle, and the next thing I knew I was lying on my driveway with a broken hip. Oh well, look at it as time to get model projects done . Hope you heal up OK!
disabled modeler Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Sorry to hear that....I have the same luck being accident prone myself...Hope you have a speedy recovery, and for the model too. Mark
ricky12 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I HOPE THINGS WORK OUT ALRIGHT FOR YOU . AND I ALSO WAS TOLD THE SAME THING 99GT.
crazyjim Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Jon, I can possibly borrow a wheelchair from my VFW post. That would be in Florida - don't know where you're at. I hyperextended both knees in a motorcycle accident in August 2000. After the accident the Illinois cold was not good on the knees. I moved to FLA in December 2001. Gotta have warmth on the knees.
charlie8575 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Hope you feel better soon, Jon. Charlie Larkin
Jon Cole Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Thanks everyone. Oh to be young again! Moving from a chair to the crutches (or just getting out of the chair) is somethig I took for granted... not anymore. My father-in-law says he can get me a wheelchair tomorrow. Other friends who live about 30 miles away are going to get my car and drive it here. Good friends!
crazyjim Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 It's always nice to have good friends. When you're down & out you'll find out who they are. A couple of days before my cancer surgery, my most bestest friend drove 17 hours straight (West Chicago, IL to Citrus Springs, FL) to be with me and my wife for the surgery.
Guest Johnny Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Sucky ending to what was supposed to be a fun night! Hope it all goes well and heals quick! Just a note! My wife tripped on a flor mat at work three years ago and hyperextended an ankle. Never seemed to wnat to heal and hurt and burned constantly. She wound up having it partially fused in Oct. She just got off her sit down walker three weeks ago and walks with a boot and crutches. She like you could not negociate the crutches. (bad knee on other leg plus no coordination to use them ) The doctor in fact took the crutches away becase he didn't wnt her to get hurt worse!
Guest arni Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Hope you recover soon,I know what it's like.I was hit by a car while on a crossing in '94 and went to hospital in a blue light race car.LOL This winter my right knee has given me lots of pain!! Many's a night it has woken me up due to the pain..Not nice.
John Pirog Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I'm sorry to hear about your spill. Oddly enough, almost the EXACT same thing happened to me during a vacation in Germany some years ago, but I 'only' twisted my ankle a bit during the fall/stumble. If its any consolation, my supervisor at work is just getting over a broken ankle and her recovery has been quite rapid. I wish the same for you
RodneyBad Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 OMG!! The worst I've done is slipped down stairs and landed on my Rear Dang, and I thought that hurt. I don't know what to say, Ouch!! (a bunch of bad words)!!!! Take good care..
Joe Handley Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I hope things get better for you spyder!, I hyperextended my right foot getting into my Jeep in 2006 and heard I would have been better off breaking it I don't know how many times! What bugs me is after a long day, especially if it's really humid out, my foot just kiiiiiilllllllls me! I still keep a bottle of Motrin in the Jeep just in case I need some. Jon, I can possibly borrow a wheelchair from my VFW post. That would be in Florida - don't know where you're at. I hyperextended both knees in a motorcycle accident in August 2000. After the accident the Illinois cold was not good on the knees. I moved to FLA in December 2001. Gotta have warmth on the knees. Holy c r a p, that's one heck of a drive, did he atleast have somebody to drive down there with him and split some of the drive with him?
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Ouch. That's quite a fall. When I worked a local restaurant last year, I slipped on the wet floor at the end of my shift. One knee went into the floor, and the other went into the side a solid steel sink. I still get pain in both knees from time to time. Hope you get well soon, buddy.
Jon Cole Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thank you all for the kind words. The worse part of my day is transitioning in and out of the wheelchair. Too bad my bladder doesn't have an "off" switch! You know who REALLY deserves some recognition? The men and women who volunteer to man our rescue squads and ambulances! The work their tails off, take constant risks, and put the patient first! They ROCK! I had to be carried, strapped to a chair, out a side door, and hauled through unshoveled snow to reach the stretcher, then to the wagon. One EMT slipped on the ice, and we all crashed down. He was concerned for me, while I was concerned for him! In the wagon, they wanted to install an IV link in my arm, which they did successfully, while the wagon was moving, and on the first try. The hospital staff has never been able to do that to me in the past, and they had a still floor! (at least I think the place wasn't moving)
seeker589 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Jon - My heart goes out to you. It will be a good time to sand and de-burr any kits you may have in the works. I busted my leg in three places while riding my bike on a quarter-pipe 30 days before I was to go into the AirForce. Three surgeries and over a year later - I went to basic with no pain. The pain will go away - just give it time. There is no shame in crawling or using a creeper or skateboard to get to the kitchen or bathroom. Avoiding pain and figuring out how to avoid pain should be your goal. It diverts your awareness of the pain while contributing to lessening your pain. My prayers go out to you for a full recovery.
Joe Handley Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Hope things keep getting better for you then Jon! The worse part of my day is transitioning in and out of the wheelchair. Too bad my bladder doesn't have an "off" switch! I'm not sure what was worse when I sprained my foot, stairs (both directions), some of our chairs, or getting onto or off of the toilets at home
