Joe Handley Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Just wonder who here in the Midwest felt the quake this morning and how your model collections faired?
george 53 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I heard about that on this mornin's news,Joe. Didja FEEL it? About 10 years ago, they SAY there was one down in OHIO somewheres, that we got residual vibes from it. But I live off a MAIN drag where them dam double botton twin trailered trucks drive on EVERYDAY. Shoot ANYTIME on of them big ol HEAVY bastiges go by our whole house shakes! Wouldn't know a quake if i DID feel it!!!
crazyjim Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 My Leather Turtle friends up north (Maple Park, Plainfield, Aurora, St. Charles) have been emailing info. Scared the beans out of them. You doin' okay Joe? Whens is the world going to send some financial aid to the victims? Wait - I won't hold my breath. I remember years ago that I read there's a fault going through the midwest that's bigger than San Andreas and when it moves, it's going to be a major disaster.
Exotics_Builder Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Having moved to this area from the Pacific Northwest, I've experienced flatulence that has caused more shaking However, the Northern Illinois quakes are unrelated to the New Madrid fault zone which is southern Illinois and the big cities that could be impacted by a big shaker are St. Louis and Memphis. In 1811, a series of quakes that were estimated (not a lot of people around) to be magnitude 8 range actually changed the course of the Mississippi river. Back in Seattle we went through a 6.8 and the only impact was a tipped over tall pepper mill and an hour and a half power outage. How much damage an earthquake can cause is dependent on a lot of factors besides magnitude.
Joe Handley Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 We're all good here Jim, everybody seems just a bit suprised from what I saw on the local news stations this morning, didn't help much that it happend so early this morning One of our customers who spent some time in California after he finished up his hitch in the service (Korea IIRC) drug his wife out of bed and made go out to the car with him just in case since they live on the third floor of their apartment building. It rolled through West Chicago about 4:22am and I first thought it was a strong gust of wind or somebody ran into my folks house, Mom thought Dad rolled out of bed in his sleep, little sister was still asleep when I left for work this morning so I don't know if she felt anything yet. Come to think of it, I'll bet this really should up your friends in Maple Park Jim, that's close to where the epicenter was supposed to be
Joe Handley Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Come to think of it, there was a small one that hit almost 6 years ago (I think it will be 6 years in April) that woke me up, but it wasn't quite like this one. It rattled the windows a bit and that was it. When it hit I thought it was just some jerk with a monster car stereo that decided to go cruising with his dang thing cranked to 11 at 2am
george 53 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Well I'm glad yer ok there Joe. Only time I was inna quake was back in 73 in Cali, at the El Toro M.C.N.A.S. Wasn't too impressed but it sure left me wondrin wat a REAL one woulda dun.
Jon Cole Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 This subject is something to consider when trying to decide if you should glue those wheels so it won't roll off a shelf! Maybe I should take my own advice?! My recent builds have wheels that are glued, but I have several older builds not "fixed".

The last one we had (that I felt) was about 2 months ago. My wife jumped up out of bed,( it was about 6:30am) and ran to the doorway, I just stayed in bed, and teased her about how that was nothing, and she was starting to act like a tourist. But back in the late '90s the Landers quake scared the bugeebies out of me, I almost set my bed up outside, Its an awfully weird feeling when it happens. You almost always look at each other like, Do you feel that? Its almost like you don't believe it or your not sure whats going on. The small ones are kinda fun though What Gerry says is exactly right. Edited February 10, 2010 by RJWood

For those who are interested here is the USGS map for all the shakes in the US in the last couple of weeks. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/ I noticed that there was one in Texas as well. Enjoy. Mother nature is not to be messed with.
Harry P. Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I woke up at 4AM because I heard "thunder"... I thought it was odd to hear thunder in February, but I just went back to sleep. I heard on the radio later that we had an earthquake, and when I heard where it was centered, I was very surprised... it was right down the street from me! Maybe 10 miles away!!! Yikes!!!
Joe Handley Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Well heck Harry, I'm about 10 miles or so south of you

To Hawaii because you had an earthquake??? Volcano capital of the US. They had 13 shakers in the last week an 3 today! If your going for the warm tropical breezes, great, but not to get away from the shifting earth. Edited February 11, 2010 by Pete J.
crazyjim Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Joe & Harry - we used to be almost neighbors. I lived a block north of North Ave and a block east of County Farm Road. Then I moved to Aurora on Butterfield Road just west of Eola Road. I used to go up your way Harry to get on I90 on my way to Rockford.
disabled modeler Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I was up( couldn't sleep ) Felt like a strong vibration here in west central IL. Had a few things I'm going to need to repair that decided to move some. Had some in boxes that fell over I had stacked up, Haven't looked in them yet. It sure felt weird.
Harry P. Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Yea, I've work there since 2001 I'm the fat guy who usually has a full beard, glasses, and occaionally longish hair. I guess we've already seen each other plenty of times and didn't know it! Next time I'm in there I'll look for you.
