Revell VW Bus (Photos Restored)

Some of you remember back at the beginning of February, I posted an entry in the "On the workbench" section about the VW Bus I was working on, well, it's done!

 

Testors Classic White and Turquoise Blue enamel from spray cans. I was not extremely happy with the way the paint laid down. It required much more sanding, buffing and polishing than the Tamiya spray cans. I doubt I'll use the Testors for body paint again.

The emblem turned out as good as I could've expected. And I promise, I'll get the brush and some of that white paint and hit those mirrors! I thought I could get away with it, but the camera doesn't lie!

 

 

Some of the kit's "chrome" plating in didn't cover as well as it should have, so I ended up stripping it off the headlight buckets and using foil.

 

 

With no interior panels supplied with the kit. I had to make my own, and the armrests to go with them. They're a little hard to see but they're in there. Now that I have a much better camera, I think I may try get a better photo.

I can't take total credit for the colors. I built this one for my wife, so, she's the one who picked them out. She had a 71 VW Bus that was just about the same two-tone color scheme and just loved it, but always wanted one of these.

I've since painted the mirrors and added the custom vanity license plates. Because of the van's height, I had to buy a slightly larger than normal display case for it. The good news is that there's room for a small diorama!

I would not have noticed the mirrors. Think I had this

kit once I was going to use wood for the interior and

do it kind of a Chip Foose design custom wheels and

interior 2 tone paint

Beautiful build up! Reminded me of a Boy Scout Jamboree that I went to back in '68. I road in the back seat on the way there and home and the thing I remember most about the ride... no arm rest! Yup, no arm rest because I kept trying to fall asleep and without an arm rest, my head was unsupported. Weird but true!

Regardless, I have a soft spot in my heart for these little people movers and you did a very nice job.

Another giveaway is the rear glass; '64 was the first year of the wider glass, so it's for sure a pre-'64. The 'fried egg' front turn signals indicate(pun intended) it's a '62 or newer. I still can't figure out why Hasegawa put those '67 Beetle-ish 'open' wheels on it, though.

Dang, if I'd known that I didn't need to put armrests in the back to be accurate, I wouldn't have gone through the trouble to laminate, hand carve and install them.

Actually, I probably would have. The interior would look too bare without them. I also made a set for the front, but they seemed out of place, so I didn't install them. Kind of a VW philosophy of the time period. "Armrests? Why armrests, you're supposed to to be driving, not 'resting'!"

I didn't learn a lot about Bus model-year details. I was always a Superbeetle nerd. The first Bug I bought was a Super, and every one after that as well. That means, upon seeing a Super zoom by on the highway at 60 mph, I could tell you what year it was made. At 40 mph, I could tell you if it was built for Europe or export to the US.

The last one I owned I built out of spare parts, it got wrecked a traffic accident in 2002.

I really miss having a Bug in the driveway and there's a blue '72 Std. Bug just a few doors down that's been setting off to one side of a garage since we moved into our house in 2000. Hmmmm..
