oldman23 Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 (edited) Hi Everyone Does the roll cage in this photo look too big ? I used 1.9 mm rod and that comes out to .0748 or 1 3/4" in 1:1 I used .060 first but it looked like a twig instead of a roll cage. The car is supposed to have 1 1/2" tubing for the cage but in scale it looks too small to me. What is the Norm? Can anybody tell me. It's been at least 15 years since I built my last roll cage and it was for a Nascar Winston Cup car not a drag strip car. I had a 1:1 55 Chevy Gasser when I was young and I know it had a 1 3/4" main support and a 1 1/2" down rod and that was it. Please help I'm half blind and confused it's been a bad day. Somehow I got super glue on my eyelash and it dried shut and I had a hard time cutting it open. Now I don't have any Eyelashes on my right eye. How Stupid Is That? Thanks Everybody Ernie P Edited April 2, 2010 by oldman23
MikeMc Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Hey Ernie....It looks like its been padded...use a combination of the two and your set. Sorry to hear about your fun with CA...keep some debonder on hand...keeps my fingers apart!!
Yekoms Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Your bar looks OK to me. If you thik that thinner down bars would lighten' the look go for it. One more good thing about moldelin' a 60's drag car is that things weren't "standardized". Smokey
MicroNitro Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 I think NHRA rules say 1 5/8" so you would be right in there. It looks very good to me.
Peter Lombardo Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 It looks fine....when it gets painted, I am sure it will look just right. Watch out with that glue....true story, a female friend of mine was having some dry eye problems a few years ago, her mother handed her a small white bottle of eye drops, the only problem was that it was a bottle of super glue. It took her years to get most of her eyesight back in that eye. So all of you guys who use eye drops regualerly, don't leave them anywhere near your CA super glue bottles.
ricky12 Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 The size looks Ok . But it looks like its setting a little to far forward? But that's just my opinion if it was sled back a little you wouldn't see as much of the down bars so they might not look so big to you .
RodneyBad Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Yup, it looks about right.. I had glue on the back of my finger and rubbed my eye Once. Once! That was one heck of a learning Curve to get over. I Now have a Super Glue Debonder right next to my desk. I won't need it till I misplace it tho Take care and watch that blade too. Or we'll have to call you Patch next.
weasel Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 i had a post all set, then i started thinking about the eyelid deal... laughing WITH you....
Art Anderson Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 In 1/25 scale, .060" equals exactly 1.5 inches. Art
Kaleb Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 That cage looks great. I eyeball most of my stuff...I dont take time to measure it out.
MrObsessive Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Ernie, the roll bar looks fine to me----but as Rick said it looks like it's a little too forward in the interior. Maybe set it back to about the trailing edge of the door, and it would be perfect.
Junkman Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 (edited) They always look like this. I'm never convinced myself at this stage. But you will see how correct they look all of a sudden once they are painted. Edited April 2, 2010 by Junkman
oldman23 Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 Thank you Gentlemen, I would move the cage back but unfortunately that is where it belongs. As far as the NHRA rules in 1965 they did not give a dimension all it said was it must have a roll bar. So the Ford Dealer this car raced for put in a 1 1/2" roll bar. I Thank all of you for your input now I'll take it all apart sand it and glue it together properly. It's all assembled with Elmer's White Glue. Ernie
