Harry P. Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Please answer honestly. There's no right or wrong... I just want an accurate picture of your interests.
Harry P. Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 My opinion: it would be interesting, if nothing else, to see people's "other" models. And I see no downside. If a person isn't into "other" models, they can ignore the whole thing. We'll see how the poll shakes out.
highway Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Harry, what ever happened to this idea in the "Thread for Ideas for New Topics/Categories" thread that Gregg started? Here it is one more time... this time even color-coded!!! General (includes questions, comments, "What did you get today" type posts and any other topics that don't fit anywhere else) Model Cars Showcase Stock/Street/Show/Custom Competition: Straight Line (meaning drag) Competition: NASCAR/Circle Track/Road Course, etc. (basically ANY competition car other than drag) 1:1 Reference Photos Model Trucks Showcase Pickups/Street Trucks Competition: Drag/Track/Monster Truck, etc. Commercial/Fire/Emergency 1:1 Reference Photos Other Models (no category breakdown, just one catch-all for everything else) The Hobby Room Tips, Tricks and Tutorials News and Reviews Real or Model/Auto ID Quiz Resin Swap/Trade/Free/Wanted Auto Art Rants 'n' Raves Large Scale Dioramas Community Clubs Contests/Shows/Events Links/Advertisers/Web sites Community Builds Model Car Racing I know Rome wasn't built in a day, but I thought this was a very nice idea. So far the only section that was added from these ideas was the "Pickups, SUVs, Non-Commercial Trucks" in the Model Trucks section.
Roadkill2525 Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Other than cars, I build these. Most of what I have of the Gundam kits are ground based variants. RGM-79C Powered GM RGM-79D GM Cold District Type All of my Gundam kits with my 1/72 military stuff to go with them.
LOBBS Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 I'd love to see an "other" models section. Working for an aerospace supplier, I've got a long list of planes that I'd like to build someday that we make parts for. On the commercial side, everything from the Boeing 737 to the 787. On the military side, we cover the A-10, C-17, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, the new 767-based KCx tanker along with the Chinook, Apache and Bell helicopters.
Joe Handley Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Mostly cars and trucks then the Radio Control stuff. The only plane kit I've bought is an WW2 Handley-Page bomber from R.O.G. that I bought because it of the plane carrying the Handley name Then of course, I bought this over the winter too

Aaronw Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 I build a little bit of everything, cars, trucks, airplanes, helicopters, armor, space, sci-fi, science (visible eyeball etc), figures and the occasional ship. I haven't built a motorcycle yet, but have some ideas for the Italeri 1/9 scale WW2 Harley Davidson. Actually that is not entirely true, I did build some 1/35 WW2 German motorcycles when I was a kid.

If a person isn't into "other" models, they can ignore the whole thing. We'll see how the poll shakes out. Exactly my thoughts. I only build cars, but still enjoy seeing other models. And I can't say I won't ever feel like building something else other than cars someday.
highway Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 (edited) You'd have to ask Gregg. I'm not sure what happened... Ok, thanks Harry. What did happen to these ideas, Gregg? Terry Sumner Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 I think the main advantage of seeing and talking about other types of models is the opportunity for learning different modeling techniques. This "cross pollination" of techniques from other genres can only serve to help one's own modeling abilities to get better and better. There are lot's of techniques the airplane and military guys have developed over the years which have made their way into car modeling. And vice-versa. Oh..and I build a lot of airplanes too.
puddingwrestler Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 The only thing I do not build is stock. I cusgtomize everything I build violently. My main areas are SF, Cars, Wargames Terrain and heavily modified fictional aviation subjects. I've done the odd ship, made an abortive attempt at large scale figures and tried very hard to build a few planes with no alterations... but then I end up painting them whatever look right to me, not what the history books and rivet counters say is right... Anyway, there's a fairly sizable slection on my website, although it is by no means up to date, and lots of wargames stuff on my blog. If an 'other models' section starts up, I'd be happy to shovel my stuff into it. (And I do mean shovel, there's a lot of silly stuff I could show off!)
MyBradKeselowski Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I build the cars, trucks, some bikes. Since they are my preference I just mainly stick to building them. I might try a plane someday, as I will have to be in that kind of mood...
Guest Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I build mostly automotive, but venture into WWII aircraft, a few modern jets, helicopters for sure, and TOS Star Trek.
Foxer Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I had to vote honestly and checked "I only build cars". Some would argue with me even at that point since I haven't completed anything in the two years I've been retired.. and back to "BUILDING". You don't have to finish anything to build about every day. Saying that, I would not mind seeing a topic with "Other Builds". I get inspiration from all types of models and enjoy seeing a well built tank as much as a slinky custom. Modeling is modeling and I've learned many tricks watching the other branches of the hobby.
Raul_Perez Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I build: 1/24 & 1/25 cars, trucks; 1/35 WWII military dioramas; 1/20 S.F.3.D. (SciFi) dioramas; and N gauge train layouts. I tend to go in cycles...building cars for a while, then trucks, SciFi, maybe a bit of military...then off to the trains for a while... I still need to finish the tracks and weathering on the tank for this one. I need to finish the base and a bit of the weathering on the vehicle for the Star Wars diorama. Most of you have seen enough of my cars and truck to know I build them, too. Later,
LDO Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I think a forum called "Other Models" would be cool, but I wouldn't want to see separate forums for tanks, planes, ships, sci-fi, etc. Not that I have a problem with any of that, but this is a model car website and it could too easily lose focus. There are great sites out there for other types of models, It's cool going to those sites to read about tanks & planes. I do really like Jairus's idea of a 1/48 Racing Plane Group Build. (piston only). It's not too off-topic for gearheads; lots of horsepower, crazy speed, and shiny paint. What's not to love?

I agree with that. "Other Models" would be ONE single "catchall" category... no breakouts for specific "other" models. My thought is, if enough members here actually do have an interest in seeing "other" models, it might be nice to have a place to display them... and being a separate category would make it both easy to avoid (for those not interested) and easy to find for those who are.

bigmikevee Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Harry, Good topic for you and Gregg to acquire more insight into what people here think. Personally, I like cars, respect anyone building anything, but I get on the Model Car Forum to watch Model Cars. Simple links to other items might be good, but keep it simple....if it floats, it is a ship, if it flies......If people care to look they can, and if not.... I think seeing other ideas and converting to our passion is great, armor, ships, planes ALL bring some interesting ideas for assembly, finishing, weathering, displaying, but at the end of the day, it's all about Model Cars. Thanks for reading. Mike

I'm basically just getting a read on member's interests... it's always good to be up on what members want, like, don't like, etc.
impcon Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Hi Harry, I build cars and trucks and I collect planes and ships = but I have not built an airplane since the early '70's and that was a tiny Piper Cub that I used to have hanging from the rear view mirror of my '59 Impala convertible. The little thing got lots of comments about how cute it was. I think that as has been stated, there is a lot of knowledge to be gleaned and shared with other types of modelling - so a seperate category may be interesting and worth while. I am just getting back into building myself after a long time away and it is interesting to see the tools and modelling aids available now as opposed to when I was last building almost fifteen years ago. So I'd have to agree that we can only learn from the works and experiences of others and if we aren't interested - then don't look. Just my opinion....
Blake Rogers Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 hey harry myself i build everything but lately its been cars-trucks. the way i see it things like wreathing and using PE helps in all forms of our hobby but it all boils down to what you and greg want on this site but something new would be neat.
Terror Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I build figures also. But my guess is,that if its allowed to add other stuff, they will spill out in the workbench forum.Just like the 15 or so truck wips in there now.Gregg will have to change the name to Model Magazine??LOL

If we add an "Other Models" section, I'll move anything I find in "Under Glass" or "On the Workbench" that doesn't belong there to the "Other" section, so that the "other" models don't get mixed in where they don't belong.
