Zoom Zoom Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Got this one done late winter to debut at the Birmingham NNL, and it was just recently published in Scale Auto. I didn't take my own beauty shots of it until this evening. It's a great kit, I built it to (hopefully) competitive OOB standards. It's a good kit for that kind of approach, though it would look killer w/a few aftermarket pieces like p/e grilles, headrest fans/grille, and seatbelt detail. Paint is Tamiya Champagne Gold, decanted and airbrushed. I enjoyed building this kit, and would build one again in a heartbeat, but I'd prefer the next one to be an Aoshima revision of this kit into an AMG SL65 Black Series. I can only hope... BTW, I've seen these kits at Hobby Lobby...take that 40% off coupon and you're good to go for about 30 bux
Rob Hall Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 (edited) Sharp build. It's a sweet kit...I got mine last month, haven't started it. I see quite a few of these in 1:1 around, esp. in Paradise Valley and Scottsdale, in stock and blinged styles. Not sure how I want to do mine...thinking about a color scheme that is classy and subtle. Edited July 7, 2010 by Rob Hall

I'm amazed that I've only seen 2 of these cars, a red one at Road Atlanta and a black one on the interstate. I've seen more Ferrari California's (about 6 of them so far)...and I like the Benz much better. I've seen two SLS's already in Atlanta...dunno why the AMG SL63's are so elusive around here.

They always seem to be silver, black, or white around here... lots of SLs with IMHO tasteless giant chrome bling wheels...I like the styling of the '02-'08 version, but the front facelift this kit shows off is particularly effective. It probably helps that about a mile from me is a major M-B dealer, so I see plenty close to home as well as out in the burbs.
Harry P. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Paint is champagne gold??? Looks like silver in the photos.
bsoder Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Paint is champagne gold??? Looks like silver in the photos. I had a 92 champagne gold Lincoln and for some reason pics. of it especially in bright light seemed to make it look more silverish than it actually was?..anyway I happened to pick up the SA issue since I made the NNLW segment and read your article..looks even better on my screen!..just beautiful man
glenn Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 wow great build, what method have you used to outline all of the panel gaps? your panel gaps are really realistic.I have seen quite a few methods of how to do it but have never seen any of them turn out as good as this.
MILD Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I simply love how subtle that champagne is... it was the colour I wanted for my Impala. That model looks fantastic.

Thanks! I do panel lines a couple of different ways. On this model it was a thin wash of Tamiya acrylic paint applied w/a very fine point brush. Sometimes when I plan ahead I will apply black lines w/a Pigma Micron .005 pigment liner pen, in between colour coats. This way the black shows through the next layers of colors as a darker shade. It works pretty well, but you have to be using a colour that has good pigment, some colours require a lot of extra coats to cover the black which is too dark.
cruz Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I just saw this beauty on the Scale Auto Magazine Bob and of course, I must say it's just gorgeous!!!
Chuck Most Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I love it, but I'm especially amazed at how convincing you made that simplified engine look in the completed model! I'm not a huge fan of late model luxury-sports cars, but after reading the article on it and seeing this post, I might just have to change my ways...
bluemoose Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 superb workmanship! The engine compartment and interior are splendid. I need to check my Hobby Lobby for this one.
vizio93 Posted July 10, 2010 Posted July 10, 2010 Come on Bob, you can't take pictures of the real SL63 and try and convince us all its a model !!! Nice job on this one man, I like the wheels and the interior detail
sjordan2 Posted July 10, 2010 Posted July 10, 2010 I'd love to see what you could do with the 1/16 Gullwing (if you're interested, I have about 2 GB of reference on 4 CDs that I could send you).
Scalper Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Nice build . great paint. panel lines look good. how low did she take to build?
kelson Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Great looking build and photography as well, really makes the car look 1:1,i have both versions of this kit what sold me on it was the pictures of built ups of both kits on the Aoshima website and seeing your build makes me glad i bought them.
horsepower Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Really great build, i think that this is one of those cars that looks sorta odd without the top, just my opinion. A question about the OOB classification though it's just a technicality though, I thought the use of BMF wasn't allowed it OOB builds, you gave it away in the coverage of the build in SA, you used it for hose clamps. Great job, now do a McClaren one in black.
Zoom Zoom Posted July 15, 2010 Author Posted July 15, 2010 (edited) Nice build . great paint. panel lines look good. how low did she take to build? Thanks! I worked on it over the winter, I can't really remember. It was a fairly quick process with a lot of hours put in marathon sessions before it debuted at the Birmingham AL NNL in early March. Hope you won't be too upset, but my recent McLaren SLR 722 is painted Grabber Orange Not sure when it will be published, but it's been submitted...you can find it in my Fotki album from the link in my signature. I can't wait for Revell's SLS gullwing. I don't know about black...it sure looks good in red. Edited July 15, 2010 by Zoom Zoom
Rob Hall Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Speaking of the McLaren SLR 722, are the wheels the only difference from the regular SLR kit? I have the regular one but passed on the 722..
Zoom Zoom Posted July 15, 2010 Author Posted July 15, 2010 Speaking of the McLaren SLR 722, are the wheels the only difference from the regular SLR kit? I have the regular one but passed on the 722.. Wheels, front fascia (has a deeper chin splitter, fascia is now 3 pieces instead of one...rather disappointing since it requires filling ) and new decals are the only changes. It's a weird, neat, sometimes frustrating kit.
