Steve Keck Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Okay, so I've been seeing commercials for a paint masking tape called "Frogtape" which, supposedly, prevents bleed-through under the tape thanks to a "scientifically developed" process. Has anyone tried it for models? I can't answer you about the Frogtape, however, I can offer some related advice. Locally, the Frogtape and an impersonator were both sold at Sherwin Williams. Frogtape was going for $9 a roll and Shurtape went for $2 on close out. Both were 1 1/2 inches by (I'm guessing) 300 feet. Both look like the wide Tamiya tape. Shurtape would only stick to itself.
highway Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Shurtape would only stick to itself. And sometimes it won't even do that!!! I used to work in a warehouse that sold that junk, and saved some from the dumpster during a cleanup on time. I should have let it go to the dumpster, because that's where it went anyway. I'm not sure who makes the Frogtape, but I've found Intertape and 3M brands to be the best, well from what I brought home from the warehouse when they were throwing out old stock, anyway.

I bought a roll when everyone on the interweb was commenting about how it was "just like Tamiya". Wrong. Doesn't stick to anything but itself.

I bought a roll when everyone on the interweb was commenting about how it was "just like Tamiya". Wrong. Doesn't stick to anything but itself. Thank goodness! I thought I was the only one who couldn't get proper performance out of that Shurtape stuff! I also found it basically worthless ... after it ruined a couple of paintjobs for me. I have no idea what Frogtape is and have not tried it. I don't even have any frogs. + Having said that, I wonder if this is a usefull or useless comment.
Longbox55 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 From what i understand, Frogtape is intended for use with water based latex paints. The adheasive is supposed to react with the solvents in the paint to seal the surface from bleed. Don't know how well it would work, or even if it would work at all, with the common paints/laquers used for models. I personlly use 3M, but have recently tried Painters Pride Green Precision from the local Menards with good results.
Zoom Zoom Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I love Shurtape Gold. They sell other varieties, maybe they've changed the formula...what I have works just like Tamiya tape. It's not supposed to stick like "regular" masking tape. It is 10,000 times better than the blue or green painters tapes. I use the Shuretape Gold w/Glad Press 'n Seal. The little bit that the Shuretape comes up is pretty much exactly like I've had happen w/Tamiya tape.
1320wayne Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I don't know if my testimonial will help or not. I picked up a roll as I was curious to see if their claims were justified. Now, I have only used it one time (see picture below) but I was very pleased with the results. My two concerns (when masking) are always whether or not there will be any bleedthrough and if the tape used for the masking will peel off any of base color as sometimes the knife cuts for the masking will cut into the base coat and cause this to happen. I am happy to say that neither happened. The paint that I used for what you see pictured here were both Acrylic Enamels. I know that a lot of people swear by the Tamiya masking tape and it's success but I have never tried it. I can tell you that so far I am happy with Frogtape and I will keep using it in the future.
Car Crazy 81 Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 (edited) I'd first heard about Frogtape on one of their commerials so i'd went over to Lowes and bought a roll just to try it out and its AWESOME. Heres the results on my 69 Cutlass. I'd bought the 1 inch tape which goes for $5.42 a roll. And they also have the 1 1/2 inch roll & 2 inch roll. The 1 inch is perfect width for models. And i also use 3M Green Auto Body tape. Edited July 9, 2010 by LSU Fan 1981
