My next build is going to be a Mopar with (hopefully) small letter polyglass tires - whats the best way to go about this?

  • Shabo dry transfers? Do they look legit?
  • Painting the kit tires - if so what type of paint should I use?
  • Anyone make something ready to go?

Thanks in advance!

Try to find a set of plyglass tires from the current issue of AMT's 71' Charger R/T kit. Tires are excellant and the raised letters are easy to detail.

Which scale? If 1/25, the GY Polyglas tires in the mid '90s Revell '69 Yenkp Camaros, etc. are the best IMHO. The MPC/AMT tires look too fat/bulgy to my eyes.

Ian, if you can find a set of the MRC Pollyglas tires I think you'll really like them. They've been out of production for a while so you'll have to look on ebay or get really lucky to find them at a LHS. They also did a set of Mickey Thompsons and Firestone Wide Ovals........Here is what you'd be looking for.

I gotta agree with Casey. The Revell polyglas tires are the best looking IMO. Just paint them with some white acrylic water based paint. They are fairly easy to paint. Here's a photo of one on a Camaro I built.

I just want to add that Roger is correct! Use acrylic paint whenever painting vinyl tires. For some reason oil based paints do not dry when painted on vinyl and rub off if touched. Just one of those interesting tidbits that bare repeating.... ;)

I'm building in 1/25 scale.

I have a set of the '71 Charger tires which I agree look great. I'll give acrylic paint a try, thanks!

I'll also keep an eye out for those MRC tire sets.

Just to confirm, Tamiya paint would be acrylic, right?

I'm not familiar with Tamiya paints, but if it has acrylic on the bottle, you're good to go. If you're unsure, put a drop of your paint in water. If it dillutes and spreads out across the water, then it's water based acrylic. If it does nothing, you have enamel or laquer.

The MRC wheel sets are nice for the wheels, but the tires are way too big, especially for 1/25. They look too big on a 1/24 kit also IMO. I've used the wheels, but never used the tires.

Ian,

The Tamiya paints in the round bottles are acrylic (they also make a line of solvent-based paints that aren't easily found in the U.S.,) and they work well.

The best approach for doing the letters is dry-brushing.

I'll give you one more option, I used a white GEL pen to do my tires with. Once applied DO NOT touch them for a while. Give the GEL time to dry. I waited an hour. Then take some clear lacquer and spray the tires. Once dry you can do what ever you want with them. I learned this from someone on this board. Just trying to pass some good info on that worked for me.
