oldscool Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I've gone to my profile and my settings and can't seem to find it anywhere
SuperStockAndy Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 When you went to the settings, did you click on the "Profile" tab? If you click on that, then click on "Change Avatar" it should be there.
MikeMc Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Upper right , click on your name, menu drops down, click settings, then look for profile, click that..look down for change avatar...
oldscool Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 OK, I found out where to go but it won't let me change it. It tells me the pic is too big or can't be determined. oldscool the lonesome polecat
MikeMc Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) Then you need to downsize it...photobucket will allow you to do this...also MS word will downsize images... the picture I'm using is 600 x 704 @44.7 kb The key is the size of your file....as long as it is under 50kb, it should resize if image scale is on.... Your image avatars Upload a new image from your computerEnter a URL to an online avatar image-or- enter your Gravatar e-mail addressImage Scale On (This will scale the image down for you if it's too big in pixel size) Edited January 26, 2011 by Stasch
Harry P. Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 There is a maximum size allowed. I think it's 150x150 pixels.
Jordan White Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 For me it says avatars can't be any larger than 150x150 pixels and 55kb in size, I assume it's the same for you. Basically, you have to go into either Photoshop or Paint, and simply shrink the image until it fits into those parameters. You also have to make sure you're using the correct spot to upload (one's for images off your computer, the other is using the URL of a pic online).
Jon Cole Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I have Fotki for a photo host, most of my pics are OK to use for avatars. If not, then I highly recommend this: http://www.picresize.com/ So easy, even I can use it.
oldscool Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 you can have this one..... Uhh...you can keep that one oldscool the lonesome polecat
oldscool Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks for all the help everyone. I have tried several different things and can't get it to work but it's no big deal. The avatar I have now is fine. oldscool the lonesome polecat
Spex84 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 It occurred to me just now that I should have an avatar, but seem to be having some trouble making it work...the image I want to use is a JPG, 120px by 120px, about 36kb in size, 72 dpi. I keep getting the message: "That type of file is not allowed". I've tried pasting all 3 link variations from Photobucket (direct, IMG, and href link); same message appears. Also the "upload photo" field is completely blank; nothing to click on in order to actually upload a file.Any advice, folks? I'm using Firefox, could that be the problem? MCM is OK with my photobucket links usually, so I don't see why this should be any different.

MCM is OK with my photobucket links usually, so I don't see why this should be any different.Last time I had a similar occurrence (running Firefox) I found that if I saved the photo in question to my hard drive, and posted it from there, the "That type of file is not allowed"" message wasn't triggered...for some mysterious reason.I can't guarantee it will work in your case, but it's worth a shot. There is an upper limit as to file size for avatar pix, but you should be well under that (I believe).Far as why the "upload photo" field is blank...I have no clue.Chrome is free, seems to play nice with MCM most of the time, and I've been very pleased with how it works and its customization ability. I still have Firefox installed, but since using Chrome for a while, I wouldn't go back (though there ARE some features of FF I prefer).
Spex84 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Thanks Bill...maybe I should try Chrome and see if it sorts out the various janky things I've experienced around here.
Xingu Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 If I remember correctly, your avatar will be a direct upload to the site, not a shared link from a hosting site. Doing like Bill mentioned, saving to your hard drive and uploading from there, should work.
1930fordpickup Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Thanks bringing this back up Chris. It worked for me. I used this link from Jon Cole above http://www.picresize.com/ and now I have an avatar. It is a car my late friend helped restore.
Spex84 Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Thanks guys, I have no problem making an avatar in Photoshop or saving one to my hard drive--it's just that the "Upload from folder" option is broken, hence my attempt to link from Photobucket. I'll update once I've tried it with Chrome. Have been avoiding Chrome since I tried it when it was about a year old, ran like a total pig. It must be better now as many people seem to use it.

It must be better now as many people seem to use it.I had a similar experience the first time I tried Chrome on an older machine. It was close to useless, and I didn't bother with it again until maybe 3 years or so ago when I upgraded my system after a hard-drive crash. I've been happy with it since then...but it does encounter the occasional difficulties people mention on this site...slow loading, responses dumped into "404" limbo, etc. I change avatars frequently, and it works a treat so long as the file size is within limits.
