Mooneyzs Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 i have a quick question for you chris. what will be the 1:1 distance from the center of the rear axle to the mid plate when you are done? thanks. Hey Dave, i just want to make sre i am understanding correctly that you are meaning from the center of the rear axle to what i am calling the motor mount plate which is the.plate between the block and bell housing right? I will have to measure it tonight and scale it up and get you the 1:1 measurement. And you can let me know if that is correct or what the distance should be. Thanks again for all of your help.
comp1839 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 yes chris. that would be, what i call, the mid plate. and that would be dimension i was interested in. thanks.
Mooneyzs Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 Dave sounds great. I will get that measurement for you when I get home tonight. Thanks again.
Mooneyzs Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 yes chris. that would be, what i call, the mid plate. and that would be dimension i was interested in. thanks. Dave I took a measurement and got 3.75" which ended up being 60" for the 1:1 distance.
Dave42 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Simply amazing work. I've been watching for awhile, not really qualified to comment, aside from just saying this a level of modeling I've never imagined. Sorry to hear about moving the engine. This might be easy for me to say since I don't have to do it, but, you're right, with as much work as you've put into this, you'd never be happy with leaving well enough alone. Anyway, you've got skill man. Dave
comp1839 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 chris, i can't say what this particular car was built too, as i'm not a don prudhomme chassis expert but, 60" is a pretty typical number for that distance. is that the dimension you already have (3.75")? or is that the dimension you are now working to?
Mooneyzs Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Dave42.... Thabks for following along and appreciate your kind comments. You are right about the thought of not changing it, i would probably not be as happy. I dobt really mind the extra work. It has tought me some things for the next funny car build. Sone of those details that I would pay attention to ahead of time. Dave the 3.75" (60" 1:1) dimension is going to be what i am working too. The existing or what i should say what i was working to was a dimension of 3.25" (52" 1:1). Thank you for letting me know that i am in the ballpark with the 60". I have appreciated all of your help so far in this. I am sure i may have some more questions for you lol. Thanks again
brad4321 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 The most impressive thing about this model to me is that you've painted nothing. I wish I had that kind of patience. I enjoy seeing my models come along with finished assemblies here and there and thus I end up painting as I go. My builds will no doubt be better if I could force myself to do what you do. I have no idea why I'm such a hurry.
bobthehobbyguy Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I am very impressed with your building skills. It takes a lot of dedication to tear up the previous work when it is done so nicely. Also I think it is great that you are sharing your process for building this car. I hope to able to see this model in person when it is finished. Is there a chance you be coming the the nnlwest next year? bobthehobbyguy

Even if its just primer but with the level of detail and out come on this build I was wanting to get most of the fabrication done on it before I shot any primer. This build has even tought me to have more patience than I already have. my biggest piece of advice to people is to take your time and not rush anything. Is there a chance you be coming the the nnlwest next year? bobthehobbyguy Hey Bob thanks for the compliments on my building skills. I want this build to be the best I have done to date and with the level of detail that I am doing on this, I don't mind that I have to go back and fix it since I want it to be right. And knowing me, I would be upset with myself if I didn't fix it. I just wish I would have noticed some of this stuff before hand but its ok. I love this hobby and I love to build. Thanks for following along with this build. You know my original goal when I started this kit back in March of this year was to have it done by the NNL west in Santa Clara. I am planning on being there and I wanted this one done for it but with the hours I am putting in at work right now for a specific project and having to redo some stuff I am not going to rush this build, so I can't promise that it will be done. But I will bring this build with me even if its not done and display the progress I made to that date.
Mooneyzs Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) Ok so I had mentioned that I was going to post a few pics of the actual car and location of the engine. I will post the existing location of the engine and also pics of it in the postion that it will be going to. Again thanks for following along everyone, OK So here is the actual vehicle: Here is the current location of the engine in the model: Here is an up-close shot of the engine and take notice of the header location and window pillar, the front of the headers is lining up with the pillar: Here is the location I will be moving the engine too: Here is the up-close shot and you can see that the rear of the headers lines up with the window pillar just like the actual car: Edited July 24, 2017 by Mooneyzs
eviltwincustoms Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 It does look better your blower hat isn't setting in the interior with you now. I would almost say that the headers need to be angled back more off of the block and more angle on the openings of the zoomies but I can't really tell. On the actual car, they look like they blow out at an angle instead of straight out. Are they by chance tucked up closer to the body and shorter as you get closer to the back header tube?
tyrone Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 WOW.....Brad the stance looks just likes the real car awesome work......
Pro Tech Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Chris, looking good! looks like you got the stance and engine placement dead on. Charlie Pro Tech
Mooneyzs Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Bart... Thanks man I think it looks so much better that the blower wont be sitting in the interior once i get this all moved. My headers were some what copied from the kits headers. They do go out at an angle but it may not be as much as in the pic of the real car. I an debatig if i should re do them or not considering i had 30 hours ib these headers alone. So that is up in the air. Looks as if they had just a tad more sticking out of the body as well. Tyrone... Thanks man. I am happy with the stacr now and glad i went back and redid it when I did. Charlie... Thanks Bud on th compliments. I am making progress. It's slow but getting there.

Chris, I hear ya man... dedicating that kind of time in headers hurts if you decide to remake them. I say if it isn't that far off, go with what you have.
Mooneyzs Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) Bart....I hear you about using them if they arent that far off. I would say that these are close enough but think they would be much easier to make the 2nd time round since i already went thru the learning pains on these lol. But I will look at them a little more closely to see how far they are off and if i should do another set or not. Edited November 21, 2011 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Ok guys I received my new taps and a few items from Micro Mark today, so I was able to sit down for a few and start working on the new hubs. I got one tapped and installed the threads, even added loctite on the studs so there is no way of them coming out. anyway just two pics to show progress from tonight Here is the older set on the left and the new ones on the right, only got one completed and still need to do the other: Then I had to sit the hubs on the disk brake again: Edited July 24, 2017 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks Danno.... I know it doesnt seem like much since i have posted previous pics like this but now after I get the other one done i will be able to get the rear end shortened like i need to and I can start in getting the chassis work going on moving the engine forward.
gasser59 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 (edited) Chris ~ I know you've been out of town and took some of this with you to work on but I'm really missing my Vega fix. Any progress on this? I'm dying here!! Edited November 28, 2011 by gasser59
Mooneyzs Posted November 28, 2011 Author Posted November 28, 2011 (edited) Hey Brad. I did take this with me when i was in Cali visiting family and didnt have time to work on it. When i get home tonight I will be working on it and will have some pics up later. I will be tapping the other hub as well as getting the rear end narrowed so the tires are tucked under the body like I want them to be. So stay tuned Edited November 28, 2011 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 (edited) I was able to sit down tonight and do a little more work to this build. Not much but I am happy to say that I am finished with the hubs other than I need to glue the disk brakes to them. I was able to finish tapping and installing the hubs this evening. On both hubs I had used loctite on the studs when installing them. was hoping that I could have gotten more done tonight but will be working on it tomorrow night too. Here are a few pics: The Completed Hubs with Studs installed: I had to test fit the hubs and wheels together. I even took washers and the bolts and installed them to make sure they all fit well: Edited July 24, 2017 by Mooneyzs
gasser59 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 (edited) Looks killer Chris. Are you going to paint those lugs, washers and nuts? Now the building really begins. All this prior work has been foreplay. Edited November 29, 2011 by gasser59
Mooneyzs Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 (edited) Thanks Brad.... I wasn't planning on painting the studs, nuts or washers since they will be taken on and off when it is shown at shows. Give me the freedom to display with tires on or off. You are right now the real work begins...lol tonight i am hoping to.get the rear end narrowed. I am also planning on redoing the front spindles a little bit as well. Need to made some tweaks on them.....then it,s time to start cuting the chassis up and reworking it to move the engine forward. Edited November 29, 2011 by Mooneyzs
