B-dub Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 What's the best thing to use to mock up builds? something sticky enough to hold it all together but wont cause damage when pulling it back apart? I'm trying to make sure some ideas I have for cutting and modding some models will work and don't want to ruin it by doing too much. also I see a lot of a red type of putty used when people cut up and mold in parts. What is this stuff? brand/alternatives is helpful? I don't have any local hobby stores so I'm hoping I can find stuff I need at a local hardware store or home depot. I'm really wanting to build something somewhat different.. I plan to make a volksrod which will be new for me since anything I've ever done has been 100% box stock.
RodneyBad Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Nothing beats a tight fit. If that doesn't work, I just use Blue painter tape cut to size. Or I drill holes and use stick pins. But that is just me. Welcome back to building.
B-dub Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 thanks, yeah there are just some things tape wont hold together lol I have a nice big roll of masking tape for everything else. I'm trying to mock the whole front of the car up to see how well chopping the fenders off is going to work. I'm about to grab some chewing gum and stick it together I didn't know if there was some kind of substance people use for this or not
John Pol Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I use silly putty or clay to hold things togeher to see how it looks before I glue it. John Pol
Greg Pugh Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I've also used regular ol' Elmer's White glue with pretty good results. Takes a while to set up but that can also be a good thing as it gives you time to get everything positioned. Clean-up is a breeze too! Welcome back to the hobby!!
Modlbldr Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I, too, have used plain ol' Elmer's glue for mock ups. As for the putty, you can get some Bondo at a auto parts store. It comes in an orange and white tube. There are two different kinds. I think that you are looking for the professional type. It won't shrink like the other. Someone else here can confirm this. Later-
Jantrix Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I've been using Fun-Tak by Loctite for mocking up parts lately. It's a blue putty for hanging posters and the like. Works pretty well, just keep it out of crevices or its a pain to get out.
george 53 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I'm with Rob. I been useing the blue stuff for years! It works VERY well. I get it at Staples, or any office supply store.

Later- Any white glue will work well for mockups....it will wash off with water for final assy....You can use Elmer's, I prefer Aileen's tacky glue or crafters choice..WB superglue..tape in place and let dry overnight. As to the putty..use 2 part bondo glazing putty..it does not shrink
