Going to be starting a new project as soon as it arrives....a Tamiya 66 Beetle. My question is...where can I get some good aftermarket parts for this model like PE or resin parts and any accessories for it?

Posted

hey bud, the only thing i can see you getting are resin carbs and some porsche fuchs wheels. everything else is mostly scratch built or kit bashed.

I've never seen much aftermarket for this kit in particular, but there is quite a bit of aftermarket stuff for Beetles in general out there. The Tamiya kit comes with metal transfers for the VW badge on the hood and the 1300 badge on the deck lid (hood).

Great!...any links of where I might find anything for the older VW Beetles?

This kit is so nicely engineered you won't need much to add.....

Ya, but I want to add a Stinger pipe and Webbers and stuff like that. Any links where I can find them?

i used a muffler tip intended for a ferrari of some sort, i dont recall at the moment, for the stinger. they were made by mr model. but others like detail master or model factory hiro should have them as well.

historic racing miniatures has a carb set that will work. heres a link its the 8th part down on the list at the bottom of the page. http://www.islandcollectibles.net/prod022211.htm

cherokeered - For the most part, you're on your own as far as accessories go. The Revell street machine Beetle kits had decent/usable Webers with manifolds, and I may have a pair that I can spare.

I use 'bead cones' from my local Michaels store for stinger pipes, and the header tubes are easily made from solid core solder or armature wire(used for sculpting, also at Michaels):

Some .032" K&S brass rod and HO-scale lumber made a nice vintage roof rack for my Gunze '56, and I made the plaid cooler from wood dowel and photoreduced plaid material. The 'swamp cooler' AC unit was liberated from a 'Homiez' diecast lowrider, although it can be scratchbuilt or bought in resin from The Modelhaus

I'd recommend a set of Porsche alloys or BRMs, and the front beam is easily narrowed & lowered. The rear end can be dropped convincingly too. Keep in touch as you get rolling on this project, and I'll be glad to help out.

Glad to help, and I may have a few to send you if you don't feel like buying a whole pack of them.

I almost forgot about one of my favorite Beetle accessories - and you don't need to buy anything to make it either: open 'pop-out' quarter glass

Here's the link to my how-to on them:

I have seen several versions of the BRM wheels. One set was white metal and another of the exact same mold was in resin. I got another BRM version with the glue in wide five on ebay. that set pops up every now and then The BRM is the most sought after wheel ever. If you want to do 48 ida webbers you need to look around as most that I have seen in resin are way too small for a 1/24. the intake manifolds are easy to scratch.

You can make your own nerfs if you want. I am working on a master for the sandwinder baja bug but it will be a while before it is done. The bead cones do look good but I could never find them and only got some from our friend a few post above.

Exhaust you will have to scracth out. Seats you can find. Other than that there is not much done to the real cars not mentioned here.

Ouch!! I'm sure it's a nice setup, but 11 bucks(plus postage) is a little steep if all he needs is a pair of carbs. I'm sure I have a pair of decent carbs & manifolds I'd give away for nothing, if it can help out.

Thanks VW Dave, that would be great!...I sent you a PM!

Price may be a little high but did you read that you should expect at least a 6 month wait? Add your own internal commentary.

If you drive yourself a bit crazy with a lot of parts to kitbash, the Fujimi Porsche 356 kits have some nice detail. I know a lot of folks don't particularly like these, but I built one years ago, and it came out very nicely. Here's the Drastic Plastic link to the instruction sheet for the 356 Speedster.

The only downside of using the Fujimi 356 is cost...and in 1:1 there's not a lot interchangeable with a Beetle beyond the driveline. Those kits do come with very nice wheels & brakes, however.
