Darin Bastedo Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 A. I did give up after the first yaer. But the recent uprising just reminded me to make a point. sub a. Isn't calling me a fool bashing???? B. My priorities are not out of whack because I don't expect to get the parts. C. I don't miss it. But that doesn't mean it's OK to rip people off. I didn't call you a fool. I said you would be a fool if you were still waiting for it. You aren't so obviously that doesn't apply to you. you also should admit that three years or more would be a long time to be "outraged over someone taking you for a little hobby money. and of course it's not ok to rip people off but still it happens everyday. we have to take the rain as well as the sunshine. Life will never be fair, but if you contantly get outraged over little things like this the big injustices will blow you away. Be happy that most of the people you deal with don't rip you off.
Guest Johnny Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I actually had one sitting on my table at a swap meet marked free and there were no takers. Had one like that unusable. The odd thing is it kept changing shape. The longer it sat on the shelf the more it changed! Finally threw it out because I figured it was posessed!!!

Darin Bastedo Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I have a "Mad Dog" slush-cast '87 T-bird that's hilariously bad somewhere...I just can't find it. I bought it (for a dollar) just because it was SO bad I couldn't let it get by. I figured whenever I was unhappy with something I could just look at that. I wonder what yours is, and hope one day you'll shoot pictures. Maybe we need a "Worst Resin Ever" or "The worst model stuff I've ever paid good money for" thread. I mean, April Fool's is coming... Ironicly mine was Mad dog's 33 willys. Slush cast, neary a half inch thick in some placed and paper thin in others, and to make things worse the roof wasn't symetrical.
highway Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 True story. I have a 1968 Coronet R/T (resin) that I bought at a show. It was a nice casting, but over time the roof drooped in the middle. No amount of hot-water would fix it. So I found a body-only Coronet R/T resin on eBay. What they heck...the monstrocity that arrived was clearly not the one pictured. It was also so beyond-bad that I (this may be the only time I've ever returned anything...) contacted the seller and nicely told him that it was not useable, and I'd like a replacement or my money back. After a protracted discussion, he reluctantly agreed to a swap (I had to pay both sides of the postage) for another, meanwhile taking swipes at my lack of ability and repeatedly stating that I didn't know anything about resin, and was a "rookie builder" etc. etc. etc. He claimed to "make the masters for Model House" and other wild flights of fancy that couldn't possibly be true. The second one was worse. almost an inch thick in spots, warped...with chunks of gawd-knows-what in it...missing half the cowl...comically bad. I smashed the body with a hammer, sent it back to him on my own dime, and explained that I destroyed it rather than send it back for a refund and risk anyone else getting it later. I also suggested he stop mis-representing the quality of his work on eBay, and use actual photos of the item instead of photos of other casters' products. Made me feel better, anyhow. This guy is still out there selling on Ebay. Beware... Sounds like the seller of this wonderful piece of junk a member was going to build for my truck community build. Here's pics of the major project. Not worth the $60 I gave for it for sure. After looking at it closer, I have to build my own frame as the front end isn't even on level. It's also missing the rear door post and the list goes on. I know resin kits are a bit tougher than regular kits, but this is bad. At least I believe he said he was able to get his money back after a few of us told him to send it back. I think this one needs some "Hammer Time", too!!

Terror Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Those are really bad.But what gets me is this guy is still selling this junk?Maybe someone should have let people know?
mikemodeler Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 As P.T. Barnum once said.........."There's a sucker born every minute". All we can do about bad resin is to show the pictures here and let people draw their own conclusions. I don't think that would fall into the "Bashing" category. Caveat Emptor (buyer beware). The shame of it all is that I was thinking about ordering one of those bodies; Glad I didn't as I have a wide array of hammers left over from my carpenter and mechanic days!!!!
ra7c7er Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 That right their is why more novice modelers don't like to get involved with resin. If I got a body like that in my first resin purchase I probably would never do resin again.
Danno Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I think this is the first one I got...notice how it sits...that is on a level surface. Also, check out the "double wall construction" of the front wheel well. There were also a bunch of blobs (you can see one on the rear quarter) where the caster tried to fill in voids-usually where some cast-in details should have been-after the body was cast by just plopping in some resin later. This thing was UGLY, and the replacement body was worse. Yikes! Publication of that caster's identity along with the picture ~~ no commentary required ~~ would be a public service.
Darin Bastedo Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 After seeing Mark's bad resin example I feel compelled to show the opposite. This resin Falcon was from Bandit resin, and was actually easier to build than the kit body it was meant to replace. there was almost no clean-up nessesary, and everything fit right the first time. The AMT ranchero body's tooling is old and would have required a lot of sanding of mold lines to get ready for paint. I saved myself a lot of work by buying this transkit.
george 53 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I'd have to agree that Bandit Resins AND Porkies are BOTH top notch casters! I got Eric's(Porkies) 64 Cutlass and 64 Falcon, and BOTH are PERFECTLY cast! Kenny, overt Bandit Resins TAUGHT Eric! Kenny's 70 GTX body is dead on to JoHans body from which it was cast! BOTH of these guys are RIGHT UP THERE with the Modelhaus or RMoM kits! You can order from either one and be SURE you'll get a QUALITY casting!!!

highway Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 On the topic of the good guys of resin casting, Eric at P&P Resin Works is my first choice for heavy truck parts and conversions. His work is great and and he is also been very timely with shipping, I usually get my order within the same week I order it. This is his Freightliner Classic XL hood conversion set, and the hood sitting mocked up with Italeri's Frieghtliner FLD 120 cab. I also bought these fenders and toolboxs for my current project, along with a set of air cleaners for the parts box. The fenders have already been painted with DupliColor Chrome, and took very little prep work, and the toolboxes also required very little prep work and are awaiting paint. Even though it's not the best picture, this is the only one I have of the fenders after painting.
george 53 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Well, THAT IS news to me, Darin! Yeesh, I did not know that! But I sure can vouch for his handi work!! He's GOOD, and if guys with TWO good arms could cast as well as him, we'd have TONS of GREAT resin kits!!!!
mikemodeler Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 I think what makes Eric and Kenny great casters is that they care and they are builders too, not just someone trying to make a fast buck. Nice people to do business with and if you ever see them at a show, talk with them, they are really into what they are doing.
spkgibson Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 I bought a 1968 Coronet back in 1999.It is made by The Modelhaus, I haven't even touched it ,It has been moved around a number times, Been in different tempertures, Ect,Ect, Anyways, The car is still in the same condtion as the day I bought it, The same with the 68 Torino Hardtop I also bought at the same time. No warpage at all, As far as the Bandit Resins 71 Demons I own, I have had those for over 2 years, They are in the same condition as the day I got those also, Who made that body? I could use it to cut up , And make the 1969 Coronet 500 out of, All I would need that body for was the scallops in the rear quarters to blend into my MPC 69 Coronet kit.
george 53 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Mike, I have talked with Eric at length, and also consider him a freind. Never had the pleasure of speaking with Kenny, but if he's as cool as he sounds, I KNOW I'd like him too! And THANKS again for the PM.
