crazyjim Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 I think the last issue I got had Hudson's on the cover. I can hardly wait for a new MCM issue. I wish they came out twice a month, every month.
Jon Cole Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Dave, that is a great vintage build! Heck, it's better then some new stuff we see out there! Plus a 'Vair pancake!
Foxer Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I have the Porsche 356 wheels and will be casting them soon, and will be also modifying them for fitment to the manx kit when I get a hold of one. I will also have some wide versions for the rear too Yahoo Ryan!!!! Now, my 356's will be safe.
Craig Irwin Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Found this, 162.8 HP normally aspirated.
Danno Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Great looking buggy, Dave!! Issue 163 arrived here last Thursday (subscription); been busy reading it ever since. Another great one!
crazyjim Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 How would a person go about making side pods for the Manx kit? Any thoughts?
VW Dave Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) Roger, a friend of mine has a Subaru turbo engine in a clone buggy, SCAREY FAST ! My friend Kathleen's Manxter runs a Subie too....just a tick over 300hp, last I knew, and there were hints that she was going to chip & intercool it next. She's done Hot Rod's 'Power Tour' twice now. VW Dave Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) To make side pods, if you weren't concerned about casting them, I'd make 'stringers' like you see in model airplane construction and skin them with thin sheet styrene. Some people refer to this style of construction/fab as 'trellis' work, like you see in prototype car building. Exoto made a 1:18 diecast replica of the prototype Cobra Daytona Coupe, referred to as a 'rolling trellis:' Edited December 28, 2011 by VW Dave
Gregg Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Here's the three stages of trying to undercoat the Purple Metallic Meyers Manx Dune Buggy Top: Unpainted: Painted Tamiya Silver undercoat: Sprayed Tamiya Semi Gloss Black on top of Silver: I agree with Jairus, you have to sand down those sink marks from inside, and polish them up enough so that they don't show. Thanks, Jairus!!!
Danno Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Shades of the old Revell Metalflake kits! Great idea, but all those compound curves played havoc with a nice, uniform appearance.
Rob Hall Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Sounds like they are out now..people have found them at various hobby shops around the US. Will to check my LHS and see if they have it.
Gregg Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Okay, did a test. Do not paint the purple metallic with just black. It ruins it!!!! Stock chassis, unpainted Painted semi-gloss black from underneath: Ouch!!! That ones is getting painted black top and bottom!!!!
Gregg Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I found my old Revell Dune Buggy that I had worked on before. It broke a few moves ago....
VW Dave Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I have the Porsche 356 wheels and will be casting them soon, and will be also modifying them for fitment to the manx kit when I get a hold of one. I will also have some wide versions for the rear too I'd like to do the earlier 'solid' Beetle wheels for a Manx application, using either the Hasegawa Kübel or Gunze '56 Beetle centers, and Arii/Otaki rims like I did for my Charger(minus the weathering, of course): Arii wheel & tire: And my modded deep Cragars for the Charger:
RyanSilva Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) Nice dave! I got a lathe so I make all my outer hoops, just use the kit parts/resin copies for the centers and then production mold them after. Edited December 28, 2011 by RyanSilva
VW Dave Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Thanks for the compliment, Ryan. Lemme see what I've got for kit or resin centers...maybe we can help each other out. You have a PM, sir.
jbwelda Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) i may have posted these before (ahem) but you dont need no stinkin vair motor: had something roughly similar in my Thing: Edited December 28, 2011 by jbwelda
Gregg Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 For those who didn't see Tim Boyd's article in the November 2008 issue, here it is:DuneBuggyNov2008.pdf
VW Dave Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 is there a source for those white 5-spoke wheels that were on a ton of these things? You're most likely talking about the Jackman 5-spoke; my 1:1 has chrome ones, but no kit ever had them: empinut(Bill) was working on them, and he sent me a nice pre-production set of his resin centers for my replica, but I haven't heard anything since.
Chuck Most Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Those Tamiya Beetle wheels are VERY nice, just a bit more narrow than what you'd usually see on a buggy. Though I don't suppose widening them would be too far beyond the skillset of most modelers.
Craig Irwin Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 The widened VW wheels I remember on early glass buggies were the 65 and earlier smoothie wheels, like the love bug kits.
Foxer Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Thanks for the compliment, Ryan. Lemme see what I've got for kit or resin centers...maybe we can help each other out. You have a PM, sir. Just a quick note on my buddy Ryan, Dave. .. he is a superb resin caster! His wheels are smooth and clean as silk (or injected plastic, if you will) . I'm going to love seeing what comes of this !
Craig Irwin Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 OK, the good news for the Corvair swap guys is that AMT Meyers 'Toad kit has a VW transaxle with a 6 carb Corvair Mill. The bad news is that kit is as rare as hens teeth.
Craig Irwin Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 1968 for US models, other markets got changes in different years.
RodneyBad Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 AMT BluePrinter Parts pack "145" Corvair engine Any good? OK, the good news for the Corvair swap guys is that AMT Meyers 'Toad kit has a VW transaxle with a 6 carb Corvair Mill. The bad news is that kit is as rare as hens teeth.
